  • Strut AD alternate methods of compliance

    This is from Andrew McAnaul/ASW/FAA in an email to me and I posted it below;

So far we have approved 2 AMOCs:

    1. Approval for a X-ray NDI procedure. Intent is to add Xray to the
Service Bulletin and allow it in the AD.
    2. Approval for installation of Univair Part Number UA-A815 and UA-A854
struts as terminating action for the inspection requirement on BC12-D/D1
    airplanes.

I'm taking my Tcraft to my IA next week for an annual. How do I let him know there is an AMOC allowing xray? Is it posted somewhere by the FAA yet?

Contact Andy McAnaul and ask him to send you a copy of the letter.

I'll attempt to attach the approval letter Alaska X-Ray received from the FAA allowing X-Ray as an AMOC.

Re: Strut AD alternate methods of compliance

I asked Mr. Andrew if a BC12D-4-85 would be covered by the AMOC, and here is his reply:

The Univair struts are approved for Taylorcraft by PMA. The Univair
              PMA
Supplement only lists the BC12-D/D1 and BCS12-D/D1 models for
applicability. If Univair updates their PMA Supplement for other
              models we
can revise the AMOC to cover those models.

But only Alaska Xray is approved, correct? Another outfit could not do the xray, correct?

Hi Ed, that's correct but Andy says soon the x-ray process will be included in the AD as a normal method of compliance.

I am scheduled to have struts NDT'd in two weeks. Can I safely assume that xray will be an AMOC by then?

hmmm, good question, I would call Andy McAnaul to be sure, its seems reasonable based on what I recall him saying but I would verify and adjust your schedule accordingly if required.

Re: Strut AD alternate methods of compliance

I just got my paper work back from the xray place here in alaska. my struts are fine. good for another two years. I do plan on getting strus from airframes
the rear strut is twice as srong as the factorys or unavairs. with the wind we get here in Alaska thats a big pluss.

Those heavy rear struts will be a good thing, I've also seen the rear struts fail in one nights snow.

Here is the test parameters and specification sheet from L. A. X-ray, showing the method they used to X-ray the struts on four B models and one L model a month or two ago at our local airport.
