  • Strut AD Inspections in Northeast US

    Hello everyone,

I have been in touch with a few companies about performing the eddy current or ultrasound inspections detailed in recent strut AD. They have all asked the feasibility of getting several planes together to make it more cost effective for everyone. If you would be interested in participating in a group inspection in the NJ, PA, NY area (locations to be determined), please post here or contact me offline.

Some of the shops are contacting the FAA to discuss refinements in the process they feel will be better than described in both the AD and SB.

I will post pricing quotes as I receive them but wanted to get a initial headcount of interested individuals in the area.

Not sure it is feasible yet but will be sure to keep you all informed.

    Regards,
    Brian

I am interested. My ship will be getting the initial inspection this week. Assuming it passes, I could fly to an inspection point.

Otherwise will have to have them removed and ship them.

I am in the Pittsburgh, PA area and if Forrest manages to have something arranged at Alliance, I would fly there.

However, one of the things that I am missing on this whole thing is if the struts need to come off for the NDT. If they do, are we all planning to take our struts off and bring them to some central place? Or would we fly there and then take the struts off only to have to re-rig the airplane at some remote location?

I gotta tell you guys. I am really depressed over this whole thing. And why NDT if we buy the sealed struts?

My head is swimming with the bad thoughts...

These are the many questions that will pop up, I ahve done the initial on two ships, NOW the AD comes out; I question if the Clipped Wing we did and amde our own seale4d struts will apply. The "wings with springs" is a whole other issue and probably was not even considered by the writer of the AD. I am trying to converse with them now.

If you don't mind telling us, what did you find on the two initials?

This gentleman will be on my list of places to have this done. I ahve tried calling him for two hours. My two initials were well maintained aircraft, one done in 1991 at Lock Haven, they both checked out fine and will be used for our own testing up near here with NDT at the earliest opportunity. I too am anxious to see that the wall thickness is at this point in time.

Went to the NDT shop in Atlanta this AM, and got the nickel tour, what a very nice place, does lots of work for UL and DOT, lots of wrecked cars that they do the investigations on, over 2 acres in one building, I feel very comfortable having them look at my struts, they also showed me aircraft parts for them to investigate what came apart first, very interesting, LNS

Re: Strut AD Inspections in Northeast US

I too would like to have his contact info. I have Jerry Selfs old T-craft in my hanger having an annual done on it. I gave the AD info to our IA and we both inspected the struts carefully with a pick and found no reason for worry but the present owner of this t-craft(Randall Ramey of Ona,WV) would very much like to go ahead and get this AD complied thru inspection as soon as possible.
If anyone knows of anybody within 200 miles of east kentucky who can do this inspection weather it be ultrasound or eddy current then please let me know. Thank you.
