    Crispy Critter is now Crispy Crunch!!!! June 9th,2007. Crispy suffered a major setback when she left the parking apron (unmanned)and went over a 20 foot embankment landing on her nose. I really don't have the heart to tell the whole story and prefer it remain that way for now. Also embaressment lead me to tell a couple of people different stories because they insisted on an explanation that I was not prepared to give at that time.Anyway,the who thing was beyond any human control and it happened. I did have insurance and they did pay quickly and generously.Even thought that will help with the financial part of things it doesn't help the emotional part very much.I have a few pics that were taken after she was towed back to the hanger and the engine removed. I will post them on the gallery with a link added her later....maybe one of these days Rob Lees or someone can teach me how to post those large size pics directly on this board or maybe he can pull them from the gallery and do it for me.
    As for the damage....this items were destroyed,lower cowling that I put so much time into making from scratch,nose bowl,both gear legs(thanks to Safe Air Repair I already have a brand new set.Very nice but NOT CHEAP!),engine mount,intake spider(carb is ok),prop,exhaust,airbox,were all also destroyed. The firewall will straighten but is bent around the bottom thrid,boot cowl might be able to be reused but it will never look very good because of all the wrinkles so I will replace it also. The fuslage is bent up pretty badly from the front gear attach brakets forward. It could be rebuilt but one would need a factory jig to do so(if anyone knows of a factory jig or one that is as perfect as a factory jig please let me know).It pushed both the upper and lower right tubing intersections back where the engine mount bolts to the fuslage,as a result it bent the lower longeron between the firewall and the gear also misalining the forward gear fitting.It bent 2 of the tubing pieces that go up through the windshield on the right side.It bent the tube that runs along between the fuel tank and control yoke tube.It slightly bowed both the pieces of tubing that goes across the fuslage between the lower longerons,one that the brake pulleys attach too, and the other that runs directly under the bungee's that the gear bumpers attach too. As for the wings,luckily they never touched the ground BUT,the impact on her nose was hard enough to split the left rear main spar at the attach fitting. The right wing appears to have taken the blow without damage but I will uncover and check it more closely when the time comes. There was not strut damage at all either.
    I am going to go post pics to the gallery now and cry.....This time I plan on doing a full photo documetary with pics and video as she comes apart and back together so that everyone can have a very detailed workbook one the disassembly,reassembly,and rebuilding of a taylorcraft. It will be free to T-craft members.

    I'm so sorry Crispy...... At least no one got hurt....little consolation I know.....I had an engine failure on takeoff and crunched my 1940 BC-65 almost 20 years ago....I feel your pain. I came out completely unhurt.....but oh my pride....how she suffered so.

      Kevin;
      I've also got a fairly new Univair nose bowl, long upper and lower cowlings, tail feathers, and ailerons -- if you'd like. I've got a McCauley 72-48 prop cheap also. It's only 1000th over so it's at minimm for rebalancing. That said, it's cheap. We can trade as I need L2 compatible parts. I'm flying my adjustable Stromberg Carb on a cross country next week. Depending on how that works -- I'll wait on the Marvel Carb we discussed.
      With regards;

        I think the jig your airplane was built on is in Brownsville Texas. The last time I saw it, it was in Lagrange. The jig was in excellent shape the last time I saw it. I did tons of work on my fuselage in it.

        Maybe you can work something out with the factory.

          Dano,
          Thanks for the kind words...it really does hurt very much badly.
          Ed,
          We might be able to work a trade on the nose bowl.
          Winston,
          I will not send my fuslage to them but I might be interested in renting or even buy the jig if they are interested.

            Kevin, I am so sorry for your loss. You did a nice job on her. I know you will get Crispy back together even better than before.

              Re: Bad News Crispy Critter

              Sorry to hear about your Crispy Critter. Like everyone else on the forum, I shared in your progress, and I feel the disappointment in the recent setback.

              You have the skills, you still have the airplane and there are parts out there. All you need is time.

              As for the factory fuselage jig, all the tooling is in place in Brownsville. I was at the new Taylorcraft factory 2 weeks ago, and the setup is really nice, although much tighter on space. The old City of Brownsville hangers were too big, too old, and way too expensive. (Not to mention a political minefield)

              I doubt the fuselage jig would ever leave the factory. There is only one factory jig, and it needs to stay together with the other tooling. It is big, heavy, and needs to be realigned when it is moved.

              As for smaller repairs like engine mounts and landing gear, I have seen some really nice work in Brownsville (and La Grange). It depends entirely on workload and welder availability. There are several individuals on this forum who have had bent and corroded landing gear returned as good as new.

              The Taylorcraft factory is turning out new PMA'd tanks, cowlings and struts that are built to order and QA'd as per FAA regulations. Volume is not high, but the website has inquiries and traffic every day. Best of luck on your rebuild project, at least you know how to do it!

                Mike...That is a very nice posting and the helpfulness you have demonstrated to the Taylorcraft Community has been very much appreciated by me and I am sure others. The offering of help and empathy to a fellow with the kind of problems that Crispy has is comforting and makes it seem like a successful Taylorcraft Company supporting owners pursuing the joy of flying in safe aircraft just may happen. You are certainly heading things on the right course. Keep the expectations realalistic and produce what you promise and it will be the ticket to profitability. Best of luck!!!

                    Re: Bad News Crispy Critter

                    Hi Kevin,

                    Sorry to hear about your loss. I kinda know how you feel as I went through a simililar but more minor loss in April.

                    I have a BC12D engine mount that belongs to the factory on my covered front porch - long story but I do not need it. I am sure the factory would be happy to have you buy it. They were supposed to arrange for pickup several weeks ago but there it sits. Anyway it looks real nice. I could take some pics if you want.

                    You would have to talk to the factory about pricing. I could drop it by a UPS store for shipping. If you want it just call Diana and work the specifics out with her and have her let me know where to ship it. Feel free to contact me.

                    I may also have an engine you could but to rebuild if you need one.

                    Thanks,
                    Brian

                      Thanks Brian,that is very generous but I already have mount. The main things I need are a nose bowl,boot cowl,and lower cowl. Other then these things all I need to do it figure out what I'm going to do with my fuslage...try to rebuild it,try to splice a forward clip on it,or just replace it all together. I guess I'll figure it out as I go along.
