  • Starter for A65-8

I just talked to a guy who is making a starter for an A65-8. He has one on his 1940 Taylorcraft now and he got a field approval for it. I got a chance to look at it today and I think he really has it figured out. He applied for an STC and he has a machine shop working on the parts for it. He said he might be ready to sell them this fall or next spring at the latest. The isntallation puts a flywhell between the prop and flange then there is a hole in the nosebowl big enough for the starter gear to go through to engage the flywheel. The price isn't set yet depending on the costs for machining parts. I am going to have him put one on my Dads L2B this fall, he told me if the STC isn't done by then he will get a field approval.

Does it fit a Continental A65-8 with a flanged shaft and how much does it weigh and cost.

I've been searching for the same thing. Please let me know if he gets it approved.

It is totally different then the above starter. It weighs 11 pounds total and he said it would probably be $2500 complete.

Does it matter what kind of shaft is on the engine? Flanged or tapered.

I don't think it will matter if it has a flanged crank or a tappered shaft. For the installation the flywheel goes directly behind the prop, it will move the prop forward about 1/4 inch, and I think it may take 1 size longer prop bolts.
