  • Harer STC

I am about to buy the Harer STC. What I need to know is does it allow for the option of Just doing the Wing Mods so I can only add the 85 hp without all the electrical / bagage commpartment etc. I just may want to put on a 85 some day. IM really not interested in the high bross weight or the big bagage comp.

    Laz,
Yes,the Harer STC also covers the BC12D-85 upgrade which is a stock,non-electric BC12D on a short mount with a gross weight increase to 1280lbs which helps a little while keeping her sport legal. On another note.....if you do these mods for the BC12D-85 it is the same mods as the model 19 and F-19 so if you later decide to go all the way all you have to do is fill out the paperwork and install the long mount, extended cowl, and electrics.

Buy the Harer STC...do the fuel system mods....omit the wing mods and send in a 337 stating what was done and that the wing mods were not accomplished so gross weight remains 1200. I sent everything you would need to get this approved to the Foundation....including a letter from 1974 from the engineering chief at the great lakes FAA GADO stating that this is acceptable. I did it for a 90HP upgrade by simply adding a note in the 337....you are allowed 10% HP increase over that certified on the STC with a simple field approval. As I said, I sent it to the foundation. I have a copy if you need me to e-mail it to you.

Laz, while you have the plane apart I heartily suggest doing the wing mods. Not because you really want the extra gross weight, but because it's very inexpensive to do now and it will be something a buyer might want to see later on. Those little square plates on the strut fittings are the first thing I look at when I see someone's airplane.

Also, if you ever get "ramp-checked" with full fuel and a big person in the airplane with youand the FAA gets nasty, the extra 80 pounds gross even without the big baggage compartment (1280 pounds, BC-12-85) could help you avoid a problem.

I strongly aggree with Bill. Just because you do the mods does not mean you have to increase the gross....do them now to make it worth more later. This way if you or anyone else doen the road want to add the C-85-8 or even go with the full blown model 19/F-19 mod it will only require a log book entry.

If you have the plane apart....do the wing mods! My 85HP T-craft has the wing mods and the big baggage.....My dad and I bought a T-craft that had been totally re-built....no wing mods, but it had a C90-12F in it....Not certified...I got it certified before we were comitted on the purchase using the paperwork I descibed....I think it is good if you have FLYING PLANE THAT YOU WANT TO DO AN ENGINE UPGRADE ON....If your doing a re-build it seems foolish not to put in the 11/16" spar bushings and the strut fitting plates
