  • Nails for spar

I am installing new Wood spars in my daughters airplane.
What size/length and type of nails are now used for the ribs (metal) and the plywood plates (1/8 & 1/16 mahogany 90 degree plywood) attached at the ends and middle. I cannot find my old procedure book.

    Thanks
    David

    Hi David,
A search on 'nails' in the archives has lots of info. Sorry I don't know the direct answer. Howard

      David,

You can use AN301-20-4 for the ribs and AN-301-20-5 for the doubler plates.
These are 20 gauge brass plated glue coated nails at 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch long respectively.

Aircraft LBNs (Little Bitty Nails) are available from Acft. Spruce for about $9.50 per pound.

Just be sure to use enough nails to satisfy AC43-13 when you make your glue-ups.

Come by Bulverde 1T8 sometime and swap lies with Doc and myself. Doc is building new spars also -- must be a South Texas fad or something.
      Best Regards,
      Mark Julicher

        David:

I got 1/4 pound each of the 3/4, 1/2, and 3/8 aircraft nails from Aircraft Spruce. That was enough to do both wings and ailerons (with plenty left over). I used the birch plywood.

          Thanks Guy's
After reading all the NAIL posts I went back to the hanger and did some fishin. I had #20 5/8 and 3/4.
I thought about installing my clip wings on this plane and save alot of work, but my friend said NO NO and since he is my elder I should listen.
You fella's over at Bulverde should buy my clip wing project or trade me something. I also have alot of A65 stuff if interested, including nice wood prop.
I,m going to 0200. Everything is at Zuehl.
The craftsmanship on the clip wings is PERFECT.
If you know of anyone in the area that does PERFECT work in a timely manor drop me an email. I have more projects than carter made liver pills.[email protected]
          Thanks Again
          David
