  • C-85 oil consuption

My Tcart with a C-85 consumes more oil than I would like -- about a quart every 6 hours. It has a fairly large leak, but I don't think it is big enough to account for all the oil. It only has 45 hours since major -- can it just not be broken in yet? The compression is all good, greater than 77/80 on all cylinders.

If it is still high after I fix the leak, any ideas on how to track down where the oil is going and fix it. I am thinking if I have to pull cylinders to fix the leak, I might as well put new oil rings in them while I have them out. Any comments on this.

It is normal for new engines to consume a little oil. One quart every 6 hours when coupled with a leak is not that bad.

I would fix the leaks, make sure you are not loosing too much from the breather then measure the consumption. If you have good compression and the plugs are not fouled I'd think you are loosing more than you think through the leak.

Changing more than 1 variable at a time can lead you down the wrong path!

Flying is easy- to go up you pull back, to go down you pull back a little farther.

a65 spec is 1 quart every 16 hours as I recall, suspect it is similar for all the small 4 bangers

My 85 uses about 1 quart every 25 hours, and most of that through the breather. If you've just had a major on the engine, make sure it's been run in properley i.e. high rpm settings during the first 5 hours. If not, the rings won't bed in properly and you could be burning oil there.
