  • BC12D Landing Gear Question

I want to pull the bolt that connects the main gear leg to the inside leg down at the axle. Hope I made myself clear enough. The bolt on my plane is also being used to hold a bracket that attaches the wheel pant. My wheel pant bracket looks like it might have a crack in it and I need to repair it.

What do I do to remove the bolt? How do I suspend, or hold the plane? What forces do I need to consider, if any on the leg tubes?

lifting to get the weight of the leg is most easiest done via the lifting point on the engine!
I believe simply lifting the weight off the wheel is sufficient, and that may be overkill. lift the wheel off the ground and see if the bolt turns easily; that will indicate no forces in shear and you're good to go. - Mike (85-90% sure I'm right)

      Mike:

I got one of those nylon strap ratchet load tightener things from WalMart and attached it between the gear legs, cranked in a bit of tension, and the gear bolt came out (and went back in) easily. Course, my plane has the engine and wings off, so it's quite light up front.

I used an engine lift with ropes around the engine mount..with the strain off the bungees the bolts slipped out easy...

          Tim,

Either lift it at the motor mount, or hook a come along between the wheels and tighten it up. THEN drive another bolt of the same size into the hole to knock the old bolt out.
