    Re: Wing Spars

Yes, Mike. I used a duck bill pliers to squeeze the rib flange in the area of the nail hole. Flattens the flange a bit and pushes the little sharp edges around the nail hole down flat. I reused the same holes for the new nails.

Actually, now that I think about it, the duck bill pliers has become my favorite tool on this project. I use it to do a quick straighten on lightly deformed ribs, starting those little AN nails, starting nuts onto #6 screws, and a thousand other tasks where my fingers won't work. I keep them in my back pocket at all times.

I got my duck bills from the Snap-On guy for $5 in 1973. The wife was shocked! "Five bucks for pliers?!" But these days I'm getting a little arthritis in my hands and that 5 dollar investment is looking pretty good.

      Re: Wing Spars

Well just this morning I got an email from Univair saying they don't handle wood Spars! They said try Big Sky Intl. I am open to suggestions. Forrest do you have any? I would just as rather buy them from you as someone a long ways away.

PS: The puddy knife worked great to remove the nails, Thanks!

The last set of wood spars I got were from BigSky... nice outfit and good material. I used Delta air freight, and it wasn't bad to ship.

Eric, I restored a 1941 Aeronca Chief a couple of years ago and had to get a spar for it. We checked all around and ended up getting one made by Wood Wing Specialty. The spar he made us was perfect, it was exactly the right size, drilled perfectly and finished beautifuly. He this makes spars for T-crafts also. The phone number is (661)391-9464, he is located in California the same as you. I hope this helps you.

Wood Wing Specialty is my old friend Pete Plumb up there in Shafter, CA. Pete is absolutely knowledgable about wooden aircraft structure. The FAA goes to him for answers. He is a fine craftsman. I would not hesitate to have Pete build ANY wood part on ANY airplane, and I would be glad to fly anything he built. Eric, I think you would be very happy if you took a day and went up there to talk to him and see what he does. His shop is about 10 minutes north of Bakersfield.
