Tailwheel noise

I put together a Heath tailwheel with new bearings and axle.

Pumped in plenty of grease but notice a high pitch clicking sound when I roll it on a concrete floor with weight on it.

Sounds like its related to the balls moving in the race.

Anybody ever have same experience?

Axle too tight? Bearings bad even though new?

Did you change the race? It could have a rough place on the race.

Hmm, does make me think.

The Heath hub on it has a one piece bearing, the races and balls are in an assembly.

I replaced it by p/n. it looked like the old one.

Now I am speculating that it may be the wrong part??? or had been damaged in handling? suppose I could have made a flat spot during installation if I pressed on the inner race. I don't think I did that but then you never do when you made a mistake.

Most often these have tapered rollers. But this part fits right, and looks right and has right p/n. Those balls do seem unusual though.

p.s. you have one of my bungee tools as I recall, question; would it be usefull to be able to remove the bungees with it too? I usually just cut the old ones but wonder if pulling them off is usefull.

The Bungee tool works great. I have rarely seen a case where I would need to remove a bungee without the use of a pocket knife. There was one occasion where I installed the bungees on a freshly restored t-craft and forgot to put my safty cables on first and had to cut the new bungees off in order to properly install the safty cables. IMHO I think the bungees should be replaced every 3-5 years weather they appear to need it or not(just my opinion)and if I have to pull a gear leg for any reason I replace them anyway.

What part numbers did you use for bearings, and would it be too much trouble to post a pic or two of what you have? I could use that info for research for my Heath/Taylorcraft tailwheel.

Hi Marty, I came up with this manufacturer and part number;
a Killian F350-14.

I may have searched that down thru AVPAC when they were around.

Pictures of the installed wheel are the Heath. I over greased it to see if it stopped the noise, it didn't. The bearings are covered by cupped washers (Scott p/n 1364 fit) so I also took a picture of a Scott hub that appears to be the same part number so you can see teh installation behind the washer.

Thanks, great pictures. I have one Heath and one (Heath) "Taylorcraft" inscribed tailwheel. I need another hub, though, for my spare. I haven't been able to find bearings to fit the stock Heath hub, and my old ones are worn out. (Though I did find a bearing at Ace Hardware (aircraft parts) that fit perfectly. It is a sealed bearing and has been working great. I would like to put the correct one in, though. If you want, I can pick up a couple of the bearings and send them to you to try and see if that would eliminate your noise. Nice 'Military' tire, I need to find one of those for my L-2. Let me know about the bearings. I can pick them up tomorrow and have them enroute to you on Monday.
