  • Shinn/firestone Brakes

Hi Gang, I finishing up installing the brakes. According yo my drawings there is suppose to be an A-5010L spring to pull the bell crank (at the bottom of the gear legs) back when the brakes are released. If any one has one of these springs, could you please scan or photo it for me, and also measure the wire diameter, coil diameter, coil length, etc, so I can make a couple?

    Thanks, Bob

    Re: Shinn/firestone Brakes

Bob, the brake return springs were missing on my project too, I expect that is a common condition, they must rust away rather quickly in that exposed location on the gear.

I found a replacement spring at ACE Hardware for $1.59 that seems to be identical to the original. Of course, it's not PMA'd, or STC'd, or certificated, or anything like that, but I can give you the dimensions if you'd like.

Thank you Bob, but I was hoping to get a picture of an "original" spring. I also found one that worked, but I think that the original springs had a fairly short coil length and long straight tails with hooks on the ends...kind of like the internal brake springs. (I'm probably wrong)

            Bob,

I think this is what you're looking for. The wire dia. is .063". Hope this helps if you want to make some. I bought a couple of extras last year when I ordered new brake linings and rivets from Skybound in Georgia. Nice people if you want to give them a call.

              Re: Shinn/firestone Brakes

Mike, THANK YOU!!! That's exactly what I needed. Springs like that are easy to make. I'll use stainless music wire so they won't rust. And I was correct about the shape!!!

              Thanks Again, Bob

I would be interested in a set too. I am sure mine are history as it has sat on a dirt floor for 33 years.
                  Thanks; Larry

                    Re: Shinn/firestone Brakes

I am ordering the wire (stainless) to make the springs. After measuring the distance between the bellcrank and the small hole in the bottom of the gear leg, I'm afraid that the pictures M Jones sent were of the wrong spring. He probably thought I was talking about the brake shoe return springs. If Forrest or some one else that has access to the A5010L (or R) spring can get me a picture, AND they it doesn't get too harry bending the ends, I'll make some extras for free.

                      Bob,

Sorry if I didn't give you the correct info. You're right, the pictures I posted were for the "retractor" springs.
