Re: Anyone installed Vortex generators yet

Nice report Kathy, thank you for sharing. I plan on recovering my wings next winter so I might as well install a set now, and if I don't like them I won't put them back on.

      Jason,

If you do plan on this, could you video before and after performance? From inside the cockpit and outside?

      thanks,

The flatter approach defies "gut" logic, but is a VERY desirable quality if that is what would happen on a BC-65. The liftoff characteristics would be a plus also. The thing is that I love the plane soooo much now I didn't think that it was POSSABLE to improve on it's flight behavior. The only reason I would use VGs would be because I fly in west Texas off dirt strips at high density altitudes in the summer. The ONLY thing that will take off from a shorter runway than my Taylorcraft is my ultralight.

        I LOVE THIS PLANE !!!

I am working out the details on a short exploratory video regarding the difference in props and takeoff technique. I definitely plan on adding some footage of how the VG's affect the plane also. It will be a few more months before the first part is finished.

Also interested. I am now doing my annual. Have the engine offf to repaint firewall and engine. Had to have one cylinder rebuilt. Need to reline the brakes.(maybe Vic will give me some pointers) Going to rewire my "Turbo Alternator" with buss bar and better access. Works great. Also giving more thought to the ICOM 200 Com.

Now for the Vortex Gen. Cost ? And has anyone actually installed them on BC-12D; If so , tell us about it. Any improvements How? Cost ? Place to get them ?

Off Topic: Lee, I've got an ICOM 200 in the Citabria and have been very pleased with it. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

                  Lee,

I would also recommend looking @ the Valcom 760(TSO'd version). It has flip-flop capabilities and fits in a small hole. New, with tray & pre-wiring, about $750. I've had two of them and both have been great.

I've also been thinking about VG's for my Mod 19 but I would like to here some more input. Those things are expensive!!!

The website for the vgs is [www.microaero.com. price is 695.00 but the show price i think was 600.00 here in alaska.

Re: Anyone installed Vortex generators yet

There are several websites offering cheaper VG's than the STC'd ones, but they require a 337, which may or may not work for everyone, and appeal more to the experimental crowd, who don't have to worry about that process.

                      One is:
                      เกมพนันแห่งความโชคดี

The price of $100.00 is certainly appealing. But I haven't run into anyone who's installed these, so don't know how the lexan works out, or how much trouble it was getting the 337.

One interesting piece of information on the site which I think is valid is the mention of proper placement to not lower your cruise speed. I've talked to a few people who took their VG's off when it affected cruise adversely. On one, his old VG marks on the plane were too far forward, which means they were installed incorrectly (easy to do). He thought the VG's were worthless for his C180, but I really think it was placement.

So are the instructions concise enough that I could install them correctly on the BC-65? ( The ones from Microair).

I put a set from MICRO AIR on a Champ and found the instructions easy to follow. They send a template that takes all the guess work out of the install.
