Mardi Gras

My family and I went to three parades this year. I have young children, so going to Mardi Gras Parades is mandatory. We first went to a parade in Hammond on Thursday 19th. Hammond is a modest sized town near where we live. This small-town type of parade is fun because we know lots of people riding the floats and along the parade route.

Saturday we went to the Spanishtown MardiGras parade in Baton Rouge. This has become a big, well-done parade. My brother was riding for the first time. His float was a S&M theme (Sado Masochistic), so he was surrounded by inebriated well-endowed women dressed in leather straps and not much else. It's fun when you have a close friend or relative riding because when they see you, traditionally they heave as many armfulls of trinkets at you as fast as they can before the float moves out of range. In our case, my brother had alerted a couple of the busty femme sadists around him and they unloaded on us also. My daughter was on my shoulders and draped with loot. The parade-goers around us love it, too, because they reap the spoils of the errant throws, etc. Very exciting.

Sunday morning we drove into New Orleans for the Krewe of Thoth parade. We have close friends who live near the parade route. They have a party every year. We brought a ladder to this parade because I can only put one of my two children on my shoulders at a time. The throws get better every year. We got nice Frisbees, lots of stuffed animals, spears (you've gotta get a spear if your a 9 year-old boy) and a Nerf football. The kids love Mardi Gras.

We had great weather for the parades we went to (on Thur, Sat and Sun morn). Monday and Tuesday were rainy, as Lee said. So we didn't go out on those days. I work in the New Orleans area so I get these days off. Our work shuts down for Mardi Gras.
