  • Checkin' in from Up North.

    Tribe,
Finally got a new monitor...can read what's on the screen.

Brought the plane home to the lake today. Came off floats about 2 months ago...Christmas, New Years, lots of family time. Lots of snow. Two Taylorcrafts (mine and Chris's [95179 on the forum]) on skiis in front of the house...let the fun begin.
Had an interesting thing happen during Christmas holidays...My eldest son was showing his 86 year old granddad some internet information on Shemya Island, out on the far end of the Aleutian Islands, near Attu, one of the places attacked by Japan during WW II. Nate, my son, had hauled some Air Force personnel out there recently in a turboprop Cessna twin. Nate knew that his granddad's brother was shot down and killed over Yap Island, in the Pacific, while flying a F6F-5 Hellcat off the USS Enterprise, in Sept. 1944. Nate asked if his granddad would be interested in seeing some information that he had located on the Internet...to make a long story short...within just a few seconds, they were looking at pictures of the wreckage of my father- in- law's, brother's Hellcat, taken in 2005 and 2006 by a man who has been actively searching for his own uncle's wreckage in the Yap Island area. Nate helped his granddad respond to the contact email on the site. The very next morning, he received an email with more pictures, ship's documents which were declassified in 2005 and the name, with pictures, of the still-living individual who saw his brother shot down and then helped bury him at the crash site. It was good to see a grandson use the power of modern technology to bring some closure and fill in some long-missing details for his granddad. Dick

Tribemembers, I thought it would be appropriate to add this information to an old forum item, especially on Memorial Day, as we bring our minds' attention to the actions of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. The link below details the monument being dedicated to the military personnel who fell in the attacks on Yap Island, in the South Pacific. Even though the memorial site will bear the name of my wife's uncle, it reflects on all those who fell in combat in the Yap Island effort. The remains of the Hellcat flown by Ensign Joe Cox were those most viable for a monument and thus were used in the remembrance effort.
At this time, my wife and her sister plan to accompany their 88 year old father, who served as a Navy aircraft engine mechanic, to Yap Island in late July, where they will attend the dedication of the monument. As you scroll down through the information on the following link, you will be able to see what the memorial is all about. Thanks, Dick Smith

Greath job of the younger genration to help th older one to remember and to have them present at the memorial for young generation to remember what war are something we should not need. Sound like something been said before.
My 86 year old friend Tom sees one off his shipmates gone every week so take the chanse while you have it!

              Dick,

I had a similar experience recently. I was born in Washington DC, and was raised in the suburbs. I spent a lot of time hanging out at friends houses and got to know thier parents. As a kid, you never knew (or cared) what the parents did for a living.

I ran into one of those old friends recently, hadn't seen the family in 30+ years. We got to talking about the parents, and I was shocked to know what the Dad did.

I'll let the obituary explain it to you:

I had recently read the Bradley book "Flyboys" and was floored that the Japanese had cooked and eaten shot down pilots, almost including a former president!

Anyway, it's amazing to find out that one of your freind's Dad was so closely associated with such a major historical event.
