  • Oil streaked belly

Finally been doing some acro in my Swick T-craft. Actually went to an IAC competition at the Flying W in NJ this past July.

I thought I read in one of the TOC news letters about using tampons around the exit of the oil breather tube to reduce the oil stains on the belly.

My T-craft does not have inverted fuel/oil, so it's a daily chore wiping the belly after practicing aerbatics. I saved all my newsletters, but cannot find the article relating to using absorbant material around the oil breather.

What's safe/legal? My Swick is NON experimental. I don't mind cleaning but it does get old.

Does this article jogs any ones memory?

    Thanks

Try running the breather into a baby bottle instead of out the bottom of the cowl. That way you only have to empty a bottle instead of wipe the belly down.

One airplane I owned had a small Veg-All can loosely mounted on the end of the breather hose to catch the oil. You just dumped out the can after a couple of flights.

On a certified airplane I would not use a Veg-All can... probably malt liquor or something

Most mechanics would not have TOO much objection to a small 6 oz. aluminum can suspended by safety wire, and not able to get in the way of anything that moves. You can always remove the "V-8 Jiuce" printing and polish it to look like an airplane part

This is a fix a lot of us have used. I made one up and get no oil on the belly. It was originally designed for the C150 aerobat:

Just checked and can't get to the site, so follow the directions to get there and you'll find out how to make an extension for your breather.

I have run the breather clear down to the landing gear axle, OR back and out the tail; OR use the can method.
