  • down and stopped in 340'

been working on short field landings this week. Managed to get down and stopped in about 340' today. Wind helped... 10° crosswind at about 8mph.

I noted where I stopped on the runway and then came home to measure it on a Google Earth image. 338' or so.

asphalt helped a great deal also. Brakes work very nicely on asphalt!

    Fun!

those aircraft are parked right next to my Tcraft (not shown in image). There's a company on the field that buys old cargo aircraft and converts them to firebombers... but I have no clue what they are doing with the jet bombers. probably the owners pet projects or something.

I got to fly parallel to B-17 Sentimental Journey on final the other day. He was landign 4R and I was on 4L. I kept my speed up to stay as close to next to him as I could We were close! and my camera was sitting in the front seat of my truck! ARGGHH!!

Re: down and stopped in 340'

I was flying along some of the most beautiful coast lines I had ever seen a few years ago and the entire time I kept kicking myself because I left my camara in my flight bag which I kept telling myself was in the baggage compartment,on my next fuel stop(which was an hour and a half past the coast line) I stepped out of the airplane, turned to get my empty water bottle and relized the damn flight bag was setting in the back floor board behind the co-pilots seat unzipped with the camara laying in plain sight.....all I had to do was reach down and get it .

went out again today to see if I could beat 340'. Made the first turn off on 4R at Falcon. 230' actually it's not even a turn off... more like another entrance.

Wind was a big help. 030/9 and steady.

I'm pretty sure that's about as short as I can get it. Makes me feel much more at ease knowing I could drop this bird down into a 500' area if I was forced to.

I need to take out my "hat cam" and get some video next time

          fun!!

In Odessa, Texas, where the wind always blows, I could take off and land perpendicular to the runways. Stock '46 with A-75 Cont.

Re: down and stopped in 340'

Standard proceedure when I come home in the summer afternoon is to land on the runway turnoff that just happens to align with the 15-20 kt. winds across the runway. There is a pretty good overrun onto the helipad, but usually I'm stopped by the taxiway. It's really short, maybe 100 feet at the most, but the high wind is what does the trick. Have to come down the grass as far to the side of the field as possible and then make a 60 deg. turn at about 10 feet off the deck. The wind helps there also. They finally cut down the really tall palm at the far edge of the field that I had to dodge before. Perfect timing is just after the sun sets, otherwise the sun in right in my eyes and I can barely see the surface. It's really a hoot. Then the challenge is to taxi.

Re your last short landing. Better watch out, if you do that three times in a row, the guys from Alaska will come down to Falcon Field and DRAFT YOU.
I keep threatining to videotape an approach that I want to make when the Spring winds come, 40 to 50 MPH, steady, and right down the runway. I might be able to make a respectable helicopter pinnicle landing. If I pull it off, I'll load up the video clip, if not, I just won't say anything.
We used to take ultralights and fly them backwards down the runway of a private ultralight strip in Florida before I moved to the South Pacific, it was a BLAST!!! Sabrina
