In PERFECT weather the northern route is do-able with a 75 HP T-craft, but in the summer heat or the winter weather it can go from fun to not fun very fast.

Look at the Taylorcraft owners map on frappr.com and you also might find that the amount of help or friendly faces on the way will be higher on the south route.

If you fly to El Paso, you will almost fly RIGHT OVER my place. 3,700 by 90 foot strip aligned right into the prevailing winds at 08- 26. the GPS for my 26 threshhold is: N31deg 45.129min W105deg 24.113min That GPS data is BEFORE I lengthened the runway by 1,200 feet to the east, so it is actually a little east of the midpoint of the runway.
Fly the runway first, and I'll make sure that the dogs are tied up before you land. CALL me if you like, my number is (915) 449-1016. That is my cell, if I'm flying, or driving, it is off, leave me a voicemail. Brie

They are Austrailian Cattle dogs, and like to try to "heel" motor vehicles by bitting at their front tires down next to the ground when they are in motion. All my friends drive up slowly so as not to run over the dogs noses. In the spring, I'm going to get three dairy goat doe kids both in order to give the dogs sonethng "proper" to heel, and so that I can make goat cheeses to give to frends as presents. Feta, Gouda, Blue, and parmasan mostly. Brie

We have been having CAVU cold (well at night) crisp quiet weather here in the central vallely, Calif. So now is a good time. No fog lately, but don't wait too long.
I'll send you my phone in case you want to stop by Los Banos.

Re: Recommendations for a Westward route to the CA coast

I'm in Knoxville now, where my sister raises AKC german shepard dogs. I'm not really a dog person though. For me a dog has to have a job, and you sure don't want more dogs than you have jobs for. (Like my sis).

My father-in-law has cattle shepard dogs that work the herds on the Alp. Three dogs can work a herd of 60 nicely. They may be Austrian rather than Austrailian Shepards ;^)

Weather allowing I'll try to make Hot Springs AR tomorrow. I hope the CA weather is as patient as I am. It may be a week or more before I get to CA.

BTW: My wife's Godparents run a goat dairy, nothing is cuter than a kid, but the damn things grow up to be troublesome.

If you do get here anytime soon, make sure you stay well to the north of the Los Angeles metro area if the north-east winds are blowing. We have been getting high winds lately from the northeast, which flow over the mountains surrounding the city and wreak absolute havoc. Cars and large cargo trucks blown over as they pass by canyons, and those over-used pictures of our famous Hollywood Palm trees bent and broken. This is when all that happens.

You would not want to be in a Taylorcraft over Los Angeles or Burbank anytime in the last week. The winds accelerate downhill after they come over the mountains; when the northeast "Santa Ana" winds are screaming here in the city it's usually light to moderate winds out in the desert. A quarterinf tailwind for you The mountain range running roughly east-west above all the big yellow areas on the sectional chart is the range I am speaking about.

Check the weather in the Los Angeles basin when you are leaving Blythe. If they say strong north, northwest, east, or northeast winds in places like Ontario, California, Burbank, Van Nuys, Brackett airports etc, then follow Interstate 10 until you are 30 miles out from Palm Springs then find a low spot in the mountains and get to the 29 Palms, Hi-Desert, Yucca Valley area and stay out of the greater LA area. This coincides with advice I have offered before anyway, for a different reason.

Our normal wind flow is southwesterlies from the ocean out towards the desert. Under these conditions the winds in the desert will be west or southwest and strong at times, but not particularly uncomfortable.

Have a great trip. My home phone is 818-701-6801. If you have any trouble near the Los Angeles area I'll be glad to help.

Los Angeles clear, winds light and variable today. Absolutely beautiful. 78 degrees F daytime, nights about 45-55.

                              John,
The pleasure was all ours. Your plane sure looked good taking off, performed well too. Did we manage to fix the problem with your one plug wire?
                              Tribe,
John arrive the day before my 57th birthday, so I moved the date for the beef tip roast up a day. Put a nice Saurbraten sauce on it with asparagus tips, and baked potatos. Afterwards, he set up his laptop and we all watched the movie THE WORLDS FASTEST INDIAN. I had a BALL!! You guys may not know, but I have a Suzuki GSXR 1000 that I've had on the "other side" 120 many times, I guess you could call me an adrenilin junkie. The guy reminded me, Jim, and Tee so much of me it is weird. (Tee has been on the back of my bike at over 150).
John rolled out his sleeping bag on the floor of our music room, and the next day it SNOWED about two inches. At about noon, the sun came out, and he told me that he REALLY wanted to see "Manu Sina" in her hanger at Horizon Airport. I couldn't figure out why, compared to his plane, mine looks like a DOG. But he said that he REALLY wanted to see the skin of my plane firewall forward, and if I would agree, he would make it worth my while.
SOOO... aftre he took off, Tee and Jim loaded into my car, and we drove to the airport in El Paso.
After taking photos of the things on my plane thar interested him, John took the three of us out to the FINEST Chineese Buffet in El Paso, and THEN filled up the tank in my car.
                              So John, Gutes Reisen.
