  • axle nuts

one of my axle nuts is aluminum and one is steel. The aluminum one's threads are galled up pretty bad and I need a new one.

Are the nuts all the same.. meaning, if I have wheel pants do I use a different nut? or do all of them have the threaded end for the wheel pant bolt?

Also what's up with me having one in aluminum?

    Re: axle nuts

    DJ,
I think the axle nut is same as a ford. I recall taking mine to NAPA auto parts store and finding a match.

Aluminum seems like a bad choice.

so.. the one you found at NAPA, does it have a closed end on one side and is about 1.75" long?

No, sorry DJ. I think I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about a standard castellated nut for a tapered axle. That's what mine is.

I think you must have one for wheel pants or something already?

The wheel pant mounts I have seen have pices that slides into the axle and the cotter pin keeps it in place then that pant bolts to it.

The aluminum hex bar style nut was for wheel pant installation. i have the standard nuts here, will check thread, probably in the parts book.

3/4-16 is what I think it is. A buddy of mine has a lathe and is going to turn some new nuts from 4130 for me.
