Average is 39" the later post war aluminum doors give you just a bit more elbow room also.
Not sure about the Aeronca, but I did get to fly an 85hp J4 cub coup today. Easy to get in and out of, and great visibility. I thought the ailerons were rigged a bit tight but other than that it flew like most other long-wing pipers. I would still choose the Tcraft over the J4 because it suits my type of flying better.
Jim, There is a Chief and a T-craft BL-65 for sale up at Keymar airport in MD, in the same hangar. Come up and take a look if you want to get a feel for the differences. The BL is mine, but I won't apply any sales pressure The Chief is an 85hp, maybe not LSA. Howard
IMHO : The secret is that some ships have bulged out doors for more room; Like the Cessna 150M and up. The Taylorcraft is square inside with about 37.5 inches at the cross members by your knees and behind shoulders. This includes the trim stuff... The Chief is really only 34 in. at your knees; the rear tank shut off wears a hole in your left knee!!
The part behind the seat is 44 inches Wider sometimes is faster IF it is wider where it should be ; The B model Taylorcrafts are faster than the D because of that and the large amount of drag of the shock system on the D ( like a Cub).
Howard,
I would definitely like to look at the planes. I will be up in your area on Friday, Dec 08 for some flight instructions at Bermudian Airport in East Berlin, Pa. I drive up Rt.# 15 from Frederick. If you are available in the afternoon, or to give me another time, could you email me to set up something and give directions ? (email [email protected])
