Does anyone know if the stromberg carb for the continental will interchange with the Ma 2 marvel carb. I want to put a stromberg on my lycoming 65. Want to know if this is an approved interchange, and if so, what carb, stromberg number is the one we need. thanks.

    Jack:

the info I have doesn not list any Lycoming applications for the Stromberg NA-S3 family. It may be incomplete, though.

      Jack,

I'm going out on a limb here but I was told once that the Stromberg carb used on an A-40 was the same as the 0-145 because of the similar cid.

        Hey Jack,

The TCDS for the Lycoming O-145 shows that the engine is approved for the Stromberg NA-S2 carburetor. As Glen mentioned, this is the same carb as is used on the Continental A-40 and is very similar to the NA-S3 carbs. The carb bodies are nearly identical.

The Stromberg NA-S2 is a good news/bad news item. The good news is that many parts on the NA-S2 are interchangeable with the NA-S3 series carbs (floats, needles, seats, etc.). That makes overhaul pretty straightforward. Essco has the overhaul and parts manual. The bad news is they are very hard to find. I know they are out there, but they just don't seem to turn up very often.

I can't help but make a comment on the Stromberg bolted to the 145-B2. My friend has that combo on his 1940 Porterfield. It has a problem with icing-up and I have been led to believe that the Marvel on the 145 is a better match. I spent allot of time fighting that issue, making calls, etc. and gave up on it for the time being. The fellow up in PA that has all the parts for the 145's has both Marvel and Stromberg carbs for sale but $$$$.
