Have removed a cly on the t-craft today. I was moving the rod back and forth, What's normal.
I'm shaking it, front to back. It moves, i think alot.
Have not measure it yet, but whats normal. I can't get any movement in and out, but front to back seems like a lot.

According to the Continental Maintenance and Overhaul manual, the bearing clearance for the rod journals is minimum half a thousandth of an inch, (.0005") to four thousandths, (.004"). That would be for a brand new engine.

The end play is .006" minimum to a maximum of .011", replace by .015".

Sooooo, if you can get more than a .015" feeler gage between the side of the connecting rod and the counterweight on the crank, you should replace something.

Is there any sign of rubbing or galling on the sides of the connecting rod where it attaches to the crank?

I know when I did a top overhaul on my engine a few years ago, it had a lot of play in and out. But it hadn't been making any strange noises so I put it back together and just keep on flying it.

robbie: If you take the .004 clearance in the bearing of approximatey an inch width, by the time you get to the wrist pin area it has quite a bit of movement. Been a while since a I felt a new one and too lazy to do some math, but 1/4" should not be out of the picture.

Side to side is not the problem, it's the in and out movement you need to wory about. Sounds normal to me. Fix the cylinder and keep flying.

Got the cly back today, didn't need any parts, just relapped the ex valve and intake valve.
Cly looked good, had, only 200 hours on it. Ia is happy now so back to the flying game now.
