  • Rudder cables,again!!

I need some help. Does anyone know the length of the elevator cables? Or does anyone know the length the other cable, meaning I have one of the two cables with thimble ends, The one cable that I have is 188 3/4" from the ID of the thimbles. I have a second new cable with thimble and nicopress installed on one end only, now all that I need is a measurement. The measurement I'm looking for is from the ID to ID of the thimbles. In other words , where do I put the locator pegs in a board to make up this cable. This is the last cable to install in my 41 BC12 and it's been a headache trying to figure out this problem. I know it doesn't seam like such a big problem but I just haven't been able to fine any information on Taylorcraft cable lengths and I want to get it right. This is the second time I ask about cables, I didn't have any luck with my last query, maybe twice is a charm.

    Thanks, Norm G
I meant to title this post Elevator Cables not rudder cables

      Norm:

I measured mine when I took them off two years ago. Mind you, I was measuring to find out how much cable to order, not to use for duplication. But I got:

      Elevators: 185" and 188.5"
(I found the old elevator cables in my junk pile this morning and remeasured, this time I got 185.5 and 188.25 thimble to thimble)

      Rudder: 196"L and 199"R

Speaking of cables - an A&P told me to wad up the cable to look for broken strands. Another advised going over the cable wearing a glove looking for broken strands. If both tests pass, is there any reason the cable shouldn't be soaked in mineral spirits, wiped off and replaced? - Mike

Oh yeah - if required, change the cable diameter to what Forrest recommended in an earlier post

          Mike:

I go over them with a rag a couple times to see if the rag snags on any broken strands. But usually, I seem to find the broken strands first with the bare skin on my hands. Ouch!

I've been rejecting cables that have broken strands OR rust.

Don't soak the control cables in degreaser! The strands have to slide over each other when moving around a pulley. Internal lubricant keeps the strands sliding over each other. And keeps them from rusting.
Store the control cables in light grease or oil and just wipe them off when installing.

Now that you said it, it makes sense, but it would have never crossed my mind. Thanks - Mike

Thank you all for your response to my elevator cable length question. The 185" length for the short cable was what I needed.
