Harer/Gilberti STC

I need some help from someone who is doing, or has recently done, the Harer STC. I am having a problem interpreting the drawings for the rear windows. I used the drawings, as I understand them, to cut each piece exactly as depicted. But there is nothing that shows specifically how they all fit together around the diagonal tube on each side of the plane. I have photos from Jon Timlin's website and it appears there is an extra piece that I don't have a drawing for. I have checked my drawing list that came with the STC and they all appear to be there. Could someone that has actually made this window as per the Harer drawings please contact me either via PM or

There are enough errors and oversights in that STC that I would nt lose too much sleep about the rear windows. If it looks like it needs to be "that way" to get it to work, then go ahead and do it "that way", IMHO.

Consider using aluminum for the window frame like most other airplanes. I'm sure that some model Taylorcrafts (F series) used aluminum pieces, and your log entry could just say "installed Taylorcraft mfg. rear window frames" as being in compliance. If anyone asks, the Gilberti STC showed wood frames but Taylorcraft only sells the aluminum frames that were offered as later options.

I agree that the STC is pretty loose. I would prefer to use the aluminum window frames. But I don't think I want to do business with the "factory", considering their current situation. And I don't know where else to get the aluminum window frames.

Also, the STC calls for the wooden frames. If I deviate from the STC wouldn't I need a 337? I suppose I could make the aluminum frames, but I am afraid that would complicate approval even more.

Well, yes you would technically need a 337 to do it. However, I am fairly sure the Taylorcrafts built AFTER the Gilberti STC had aluminum frames... Forrest?? The poitni s that ana luminum frame would be a lot easier to do. As for the paperwork, I'd be surprised if any FAA personnel know which end of a Taylorcraft points forward!

nice set of rear window frames on E-bay over the weekend. NOt sure if they are still there or not.

The Harer ( Gilberti) STC was a way to convert a BC12D to the "equivalent" of a Model 19. Soooo that is the frames they used back then in 1950-51. Yes later on the F-19 had an aluminum frame but it was "different" more square and simply to manufacture. Some BC12D's at the end over at Conway 49-51 had the alrge rear rounded window and a piece of plywood followed the curvature of the lower part of the window. I have pictures somewhere. I have the Harer STC for my ship and will look at this problem. e-mail me direct...
