Anyone use Google Earth to check out airports and areas that you are thinking about flying into. I found out with the change angle function you can get a good pilot's eye view of such things as the ridges on final approach. On one airport near the coast that looked a little forbidding on the sectional I found that it actually was only surrounded by mild rolling hills with lots of room around the airport itself. Other areas you can really see how quickly the terrain gets nasty. Incredible site and software for getting a better picture and I understand none of the data is over 3 years old.

    Re: google earth

    Hi again, Flyguy,

Yes, Google earth is awsome! However, since both my locations are where no high speed internet service exists, it is not very useful due to the time it takes to download all that data. I downloaded the program on one computer, used it for one evening and then the computer's internet access crashed. Now have to use an older computer for e-mail/internet etc and don't have the Google earth program on it. It is really neat, though.

You can see the original Taylorcraft factory very clear on there. The runways can still be seen and you can also see about half of Barber field north of there.

          Re: google earth

I use Google Earth all the time in my aerial photo business and find it to be a VERY useful tool.

Here's a photo I took from one of my helicopters and then a Google Earth of the same area from same altitude and position.

Before I go on a shoot I look up the site on Google Earth and run a few simulated shots to see where is the best area to compose a good shot.

Google Earth is going to be doing some exciting stuff with the software. I'd like to see real world lighting depending on time of day and the ability to set up a flight path in lat/lon & altitude and download to a GPS. Also the ability to take a flight that was stored on a GPS and import into the program to see the flight profile in realtime. It's coming I'm sure..... just gotta be patient.

Mike is the owner of Sunstate.

He flew helicopters in Vietnam, and keeps one or two in Scottsdale.

I think he bought part of an airport that was closed down, and built a store on it. He does or used to keep his helicopters there.
