Out she comes...and back to wheels.....then skis....I had a blast this summer!

The Menominee River has a small backwater...you can land on the river above a hydroelectric dam and taxi into a small back water that has a boat landing....it's right across the road from Iron Mountain, MI airport. better than landing straight floats on grass eh?

How long was the drive to the airport? How slow did you have to go?? Couldn't you fly it and land on grass at the airport?

I always loved the looks you got when someone landed straight floats on the grass!!! Even better yet, were the looks when we launched on straight floats on the grass.... hooked to a pickup for a little extra "snap" on the take off roll (we'd hook a really small loop over the back side of the forward bow cleat).... did it with everything from a cub to a Beaver lots of times, and never a problem. We also launched a few 180's, 185's, a Beaver and a Birddog off a trailer...but that wasn't as much fun.

I could throw a rock and make it to the airport from this boat launch.....so landing on the grass would be silly with access like that. Sure landing on grass on straight floats is routine...but water is much easier on the floats.

Yeah...we were just never fortunate enough to have both located near eachother... it sure would make life more simple!

This pix shows the first hard frost. Float flying is about over here. Dick

Six trumpeter swans(Two adults and four youngsters) shown loading up on energy for the trip south. They are usually pretty skittish, so I was fortunate to catch a picture of them this close to the plane. Dick

                Dan,

I remember that canal leading from the backwaters to Duck Lake being very narrow with tall dead snags all over the place. Has it changed? Must have for you to taxi in there. Used to pull some huge perch out of there on last ice in the spring. Saw a northern in there once that downright scared me! I know it was well over 30#. Bet you are sad to take her off floats....but excited for skis soon!

Yeah, we got our first good hard frost today... went down to 14 here at 5:30AM. We've been in the 20's for a while... now the colors are changing fast, and the elk are finally shutting up!!!

We got 14" of snow yesterday and last night! The U.P. is known for inclement weather....but this is ridiculous....It's only Oct 13th. The weather man says were to get 8" more before today is over.

Well, I've always said that if it's got to be cold, you might as well have snow! I'll bet you have a "sled" or two Dan? Enjoy it if you can.

We had a little dusting yesterday, but the sun is out and warming things up this moring.

Hey there Dan,looks like you good her off the water just in time.lol. Maybe you won't even have to put the wheels on her this year....straight off the floats and onto the skies.
