I got my wing spar stock from spruce. It was all good stuff. My aileron spars are fir that I purchased somewhere else and inspected in accordance with the AC 43.13. I found that the hardwood dealers are not much cheaper on spar and mast grade spruce.

Do you have a EAA chapter near by.?You many find some books there.
Look for:
1. building the custom aircraft with wood,Volum 1 and 2.
2. wood aircraft building tecniques. (it has a Flybaby on the cover.)
all good reading.
