  • Desperately seeking Case magneto rotor disks

Got one of those phone calls you dread from the mechanic when my plane went in for her annual inspection today.

When he opened my Case magnetos, he discovered that the central contact strips on the rotor disks had holes burned in them. (Probably years ago.) This part is about a quarter-inch by one inch strip of metal riveted to the plastic rotor disk that touches and rotates on the central contact in the distributor cap. Apparently, they've been arcing and have holes burned about halfway through their width. Can't replace just that little metal strip, because it was apparently riveted in place before the plastic disk halves were bonded together. So I need to replace the entire rotor disk units, which include a Bakelite? gear and metal shaft. (See attached photos.)

Does anyone have some old Case 4 CAMA magnetos gathering dust on the back of the workbench that you would sell? Or just two serviceable rotor disk assemblies?

I've already tried the magneto gurus at Arn-Air in Bayard, Iowa and Savage Magneto Service in Hayward, California. I'll try to chase down some Case mags that recently changed hands on Ebay, and some guys on the Luscombe forum.

And no, I don't want to just put on new Bendix or Slick mags. I'm idealistically, if impractically, trying to keep her as original as possible.

Thanks in advance for your help -- I'm grounded until I find these parts.

You know, one of the best things about owning a Taylorcraft is the expertise and generosity of the people on this forum.

My plane is still sitting in the maintenance hangar until I find replacement magneto parts, but Gary Snell in Maine and Len Petterson in Ontario are sending me some old Case magnetos they have, bless 'em.

I'd like to collect a few more Case magnetos for parts or spares, if any more of you have some to sell...
