  • F19 battery replacement

The 12 volt battery in my F19 needs replaced. It is located in a battery box at the very back of the baggage compartment and cannot be reached from the seats. I am afraid to go back into the compartment as I weigh 260#. I think I might crack the floor. I'm thinking of removing the rear window but thought I would ask the experts before doing that. Any suggestions aside from loosing weight?

    Re: F19 battery replacement

I would have somebody that weighs less climb back there and change it for you.

I am 6'-2" and 200lbs and have spent the last 2 evenings climbing over the seat into the baggage area to remove everything for an extensive annual inspection in 100 degree texas heat and sweating like a pig!

I have removed the entire electrical system including the starter and alternator. The panel is out on the bench and will be rebuilt. I am converting it to a non electric F19 for now. The vacuum system is out and it will have Basic flight instruments only like my old BC12D. So far I have pulled 78lbs of stuff out of the plane that isn't going back in. As time and money allows I might put a light weight B&C alternator and small battery in just to run the lights and a com radio. After looking behind the panel at the HUGE mess of poorly installed and falling apart wiring it Had to come out before an electrical fire burnt the pane to the ground no BS!

          Hank,

If you or your helper decide to remove the battery box itself, be careful not to break off the vent tubes that go thru the plywood floor!!!!!!!

It takes a little gentle wiggling to get it out, but replacing those tubes is tough.

When you replace the battery do it with an RG and you never have to worry about vents or corrosion again.

            Mine has a CB-25RG (Concorde).
