My 1938 BF (built Nov 30th) is tagged with a data plate from the Conway, PA days. I believe that it should have a Taylor-Young plate. Can someone confirm this? Do any of these blank tags exist in some deep dark corner of the Taylorcraft world? If not......is anyone willing to take a high resolution e-pic of their tag so I can make a new blank one using the photo-etch process. Thanx.

Re: Data Plate
Vincent,
I do not know which is original to the late '38 B's. Can you take a good head-on pic of each with a 6" scale adjacent? PM me if so. I just can't stand the wrong plate staring at me and want to make a new (as original) for a future restoration. Where should the plate be mounted?MIKE CUSHWAY

Re: Data Plate
by any means DON'T make a copy of the data plate. It's called forgery! They are too easy to get legally.
get your a/p - I/A to write a letter to the fsdo stating what happened to the old one. They will send a letter authorizing you to purchase a new dataplate. Send their authorization letter to Forrest Barber. In care of the Foundation. He has NOS plates and will stamp it with your info as original.
In my case I simply stated the plate was lost in the last rebuild. parts were scattered around several airports over several years. No problem.
for location to mount the plate. several places were original. On the right, bottom door frame, just inside the cockpit is where most are located.

Re: Data Plate
I have a question about letters of authorization. I understand that it is necessary to verify the serial number, but I recall Forrest you said at some point that aircraft serial numbers might not have matched even out of the factory. So how do you deal with that if you need a letter of authorization?

Re: Data Plate
Sometimes a knowledgeable FAA PMI during a "conformancy inspection" will ask to see the factory number stamped somewhere on the airframe , if that does not match the paperwork then HE needs an explanation.
(ie) Fuselage replaced and not noted ; came from factory that way; deception by someone; pieces & parts put together around a data plate; fake data plates, changed data plates, all sorts of deception out there....
each case is different and WE here at the Foundation work with that Owner & Aircraft to explain the situation to the satisfaction of the FAA.Taylorcraft Foundation, Inc

Re: Data Plate
Eric,
Is it visible or did you find it with covering removed? I am curious as eventually I will have to get a letter of authorization and have Forrest stamp a new plate for me. I have a pretty rock solid paper trail but it would be nice to see the actual #. At some point in it's past, 20407 was tagged with a Conway tag and that just outright bugs me. Of course nothing in the logs.MIKE CUSHWAY
