  • landing gear strut and exhaust questions

Hi Everyone: My plane is in for its annual now and tonite the mechanic informed me that he found a crack in the left landing gear strut, not the main part of the gear with the fabric but the strut that goes from the bungees down to the gear. He's not sure if it can be repaired. I've got to find another one hopefully used. Does anyone have one or know where I could look? Does the factory make new ones?

I also need a new exhaust system It was repaired several years ago and I guess time has run out on it. I also need to replace the engine mount rubbers but since the engine has to come out for the exhaust system this shouldn't be too bad. Any ideas on the best place to buy the system would be appreciated. I think my best bet may be to go stainless.

I'm not expecting too many more problems as the airplane had a full restoration but it has been in service now for 6 years so some things may need to be replaced.

    Thanks!

Re: landing gear strut and exhaust questions

    Tom,
It's hard to imagine a landing gear that's not repairable.....they are VERY difficult to find. Maybe try Forrest.
Do a search of previous posts on the exhaust, this subject has been covered many times on the forum. If you still have questions after that, you'll get plenty of help here.

Thanks Vincent, I see you've been through it on the exhaust issue. I'm definitely going to go stainless as I want to do it once!

If you have problems regarding repairing or finding a landing gear try an ad in trade a plane. Worked wonders for me several years ago. I had three gears to pick from.

Tom - I've seen several that have been bent, straightened, and an external splint/splice welded over the bend. Of course the injury may be somewhere repair is indeed impossible. Can you describe the injury? Picture?- Mike

Thanks Mike, I haven't seen it yet but I'll check that out. Unfortunately the annual isn't being done at my home base its about a two hour drive away. I'm going to go down there this week and then I'll know more. We'll definitely check out the repair possibilities.
