  • Taylorcraft alternator

    Hi folks,

Was wondering if anyone has some advice on a good alternator for the c-85-12f. I have the B&C starter in now, it works great! I see they offer an alternator, but I believe it is not stc'd? Is there any alternators stc'd for this application?

    Thanks
    Wade

    Re: Taylorcraft alternator

I have the B&C Alternator and it is great. If you are going to get one, get the larger one. I think it is about 1.5lbs heavier but puts out a bunch more amps. The smaller one is sufficient at 12amps, but I'm pushing it with the XBox and Plasma Screen TV. (ok, my Dad WISHES I had those.....).

I think it was installed with a 337. I am on the road and will check when I get home (John H, do you remember??)

Oh yeah, there are a couple of mods you will want to do to the wiring, but very minor and easily done while installing.

Yep, yours was done with a 337, Richard. At the time we installed it, that was the only size they offered. The avionics guys at our FSDO and the maintenance guys had approved quite a few of them, and were happy to do this one. It was a no problem deal!!

Thanks for the info fellows! I'll probably go with the B&C.

I have a 5-amp B&C that I'm thrilled with. Installed by field approval.

Dusty, what engine and exhaust setup are you running? How long since the field approval was done? Dick

              C-90/O-200 & Hanlon-Wilson.

Not sure on the date - sometime before I bought the thing! Mid-80s comes to mind.

I have a teeny battery, radio, intercom, nav and landing lights - no starter - that the alternator seems to keep happy, even in the WAY cold.

                Re: Taylorcraft alternator/on C-85-8FJ

                Here's one for J.H.
I've got a C-85 8 FJ, It had fuel injection when I bought it, which was R&R 'ed w/ a Marvel Scheibler MA-3 SPA
Question can an alternator be legally installed at the cam gear drive location of the fuel pump?( Thats the same place the vacuum pump drives on an 0-200).

                  Re: Taylorcraft alternator

Wow... I'm not sure there... I'd want to run that by the FSDO before I did anything!! It sure sounds reasonable to me...but sometimes that has little to do with the eventual outcome! I'd sure be interested in knowing what they say! Murphy should have a pretty good working relation with the FAA (I know of him through a friend, Paul Cullman from Ferndale, WA) so he might be able to get something done for you... please keep us posted!!

JH thanx for the thread, Tom Murphy is the one helping me w/ N95169,he like the set up also, but we're working under the Hillsboro Or. FSDO and they hate airplanes and the people who fly them.
I'm looking for an Idaho P.O. Box #!
