There's a right wing tank on Ebay, currently at $60....sounds cheap to me, also a pair of Shinn wheels and an original nose bowl and top cowl.
These are hard to find items (not mine) if you need them.

What did they do to that nose bowl? Isn't the opening about ten times normal size?

That nose bowl may have been on a Tcraft equiped with a McDowell starter.

            Re: McDowell Starter info.

Dan, I believe it is. I had an Aeronca Chief project that I sold in favor of my Taylorcraft. The project plane had what was referred to as a "McDowell manual starter". The cowling had a similar shape to accomodate the large disk that was ratcheted via a lever & cable arrangement, thus turning the prop through a compression stroke, hopefully causing it to start. Today I did some Googling and found this link, compliments of our Aeronca brethren: http://www.aeronca.com/manuals/airpl...nt_2266098.pdf
Does anyone on the list know if what is called a "McDowell Starter" is the same as the one referenced in this link, as patented by Russell Trader? Dick

              McDowell Starter
The McDowell Starter option allows the engine to be mechanically started from the cockpit for those Continental installations without an electrical system. The hub behind the prop flange has a cable wrapped around it that can be pulled by a lever under the dash in the cockpit. It is said that the system was somewhat difficult to use and few remaining examples are to be found. (From Capt' Jon's Website)

Yes, the patent by RV Trader is for the McDowell starter. I believe that McDowell was the company that turned the RV Trader idea into reality.

I also have a ready-for-rebuilding '46 Aeronca 11AC in addition to my flying Taylorcraft. The McDowell parts are missing, undoubtedly pulled out during one of its past rebuildings. However, inside of that large hole in the nose bowl is a reverse bowl with a small hole for the crankshaft. I think that is missing on that e-bay nose bowl as the part would be pretty flimsy without that.

I read in an article once that the McDowell starter, when new worked well. And as the engine advanced into high time that the starter would continue to flip her over enough to start easily. The problem is that the McDowell starter needed constant attention with the cables and pulleys. And that once the cable broke few were repaired.

I would love to have those parts on my Aeronca.

Thanks for the responses...wanted to be sure we were not creating an erroneous line of thought...! I like the following:

The McDowell is the same as Russell Trader's design. I have heard some people also refer to it as a "Johnson Stick",don't know why....just heard it called that before by several people.
