  • Great thread on home-built additions to a/c

May I recommend you visit the newsgroup rec.aviation.owning and look for the message thread that begins "Have you created anything"

The full title is "Have you created anything home-made for your plane"?

Contains some really neat ideas including one by Blanche Cohen for building a very quick and eazy set of tie-downs using those long spikes (pole barn) and four links of heavy chain.

For those not familiar with accessing the newsgroups, try this:
Pull up GOOGLE. Type in 'rec.aviation.owning' in the search box. Press 'GROUPS" (above that box). When the articles are displayed, go to the second search box and type in 'have you created anything'. That may take you to the the mid-point of the thread and you may have to work your way forward, but it's well worth it.

If you have problems, drop me a line and I'll help you get to it. -Mike

Thanks for the recommendation, Mike. Interesting. Lots of great ideas. Lots of things to do with Velcro. Reminds me of this girl I knew in '63, she had this ahh...well, nevermind.

Here's a good one: "Wrap down tubes in windsheild with leather steering wheel wraps. Easier to grab hold of for entry and exit"

AAARRRGGGHHHH! Downtubes! That's way too "ultralight" sounding for a Taylorcraft or any certified aircraft. Downtubes originally came from hang gliders, which begat ultralights. They conjure up visions of hardware store pop rivets in aluminum lawnchair tubing in my head.

Also, anything that reduces a Taylorcraft's visibility an inch can't be good

A good place for the leather wrap would be the small gusset tube that is below the forward aileron pulley. That won't cause hardly any visibility and it's a handy place to grab the airplane.
