  • Carlson Baby Ace

Not really T craft newa but is in an odd small world way related. I just got back from venturing up to East Palestine Ohio to purchase Ernie Carlsons Baby Ace which has been sleeping for 30 plus years. He built it in 1966. Thelogs show it was first tested off of Ferris Field in East Palestine (as in Charles and Dorthy Ferris fame) Ernie Carlson is of the Carlson Aircraft Company fame. I found out about this plane from one of my dads old EAA chapter 68 buddies (Dick Hall) over in Pittsburgh where I am from (Now in South CArolina) Ernie was killed testing the 3/4 scale Storch they have since re-built and call the Carlson Cricket. His widow still runs the company and supplies many metal wing parts to Wag Aero includint the STCd CUB metal spar.... PS Forrest I understand you have been doing some testing... Carefull now as I am sure you are !! SMALL WORLD INDEED

      Hi Jim,

What part of Pittsburgh were you from? Ever get up this way?

I have a hangar at Rostraver FWQ, Belle Vernon, PA southeast of PIT.

EAA Chapter 45 is on the field here.

Does Carlson still build ultralight type craft?

        Jack,
Thank you for the reply. I am from the North Hills. My dad (He and my mother and sister all followed me down here after I graduated fro The Universith of South Carolina ) Any way we kept Taylorcraft 43831 over at Lake Hill Airport in Mars Pa (It was all part of a really nice farm then) I know the farm has ben cut up but that a US Air Pilot bought the piece of land the Airport sits on and built a house there. We kept the TCraft in the big old Green wood Hanger which I believe is still there.. In the winter we flew out of Zelinople in rented 150s which were all new then.. one of any color to choose from!! Ah well time passes all too quickly. Say did you know Ernie Postal ? He was a member of Chspter 45 His T craft is still over at Inter county Airport I believe. Someone needs to buy it from the Estate if it is not already gone, I looked at buying it several years ago.. he did not really want to sell her then but Knew he needed to. I stayed in touch with him right up to two weeks before he died last summer. He wanted me to buy the plane then...
To answer your question about Carlson Aircraft...yes they are still selline the Carlson Sparrow (looks to me like a loose copy of a Taylorcraft) She wants to get out of producing airframes though. They sounded like they they were going to do to do some extrusion/fabrication only moving foward. It was nice to be back up that way... all my relatives are no longer living and with the immediate family now here I do not get back as much as I would like to. You can never leaver home I guess.. As nice as it is here I do miss some things from up home..... Hope we can meet up some day....

          Hi Jim,

(I'll answer and then we can PM all this after this...)

I knew that Ernie Postell had passed away. I was deeply saddened. He was a kind, gentle gent and a nice guy to have in the Taylorcraft community. He was lost after his wife passed away.

By the way, I live in North Versailles, same community as Ernie. And, I flew as a student pilot out of Intercounty which is still there....And I've flown into Lake Hill years ago and yes the green hangar is still at the top of the hill but I don't know if the quonset huts are still there. I've taxied my flight instructor's Taylorcraft up that narrow little path up the field. Whew! But getting his TC out the hangar was even a bigger challenge! Takeoff downhill, land up...

Apparently you and I were vying for Ernie's T'craft. I remember him telling me that if the young fellow down in South Carolina doesn't finally take the airplane, that I could have it. Has a "fresh" recover from PIA. But I knew that he was holding you off also. I was trying to slip in behind you by offering that I could take him for a ride anytime he wanted to go, but he wouldn't bite. Claimed that you had first dibs. What makes you think that it is still there at Intercounty?

So, it's nice to finally me you, Jim. Let's stay in touch.

          Thanks,
