    MMO

    Who would ever thought MMO would start this much commotion

      Easy Norm,there are boundries here that we don't want to cross.I love all you guys too...in a brotherly kind of way.I know a couple of guys that say they love each other in a manly kind of way and I get very nervous when I'm around them by myself(very nice guys but with some very twisted morrals).
      Back to the engine subject.As most of you know I'm restoring Crispy Critter.She was struck by lightning and burned in the spring of 1970.The fire did not hurt the engine.It was removed and stored in my fathers basement.Last March I pulled it out of storage,flushed it out really good(after bore scoping the inside of the cylinders),pulled the covers off the old original case mags and sprayed them down with electrical cleaner and a little Corrosion X,then bolted it to the front of my Smith Miniplane.On the thrid prop she fired !!I couldn't believe it.It took my father,my uncle,and myself about 30 minutes taking turns proping her before it would idle but once we got her to do that she smoothed right out and has been running perfect ever since.I have put about 40-50 hours on it since then,changing the oil about every 5 hours(for the first 20 hours and every 10 hours since).I have been running MMO in it to help flush all the carbon and mineral oil contaminates out of it and the last oil change was as clean as new cooking oil(only a little darker in color).
      In the 32 years that it sat in the basement the engine was never touched,never turned over,and never moved.I can remember my father preaching to me and my brother about getting too close to it when we were kids.
      It had 250 hours SMOH when it was put in storage.I still find it hard to believe that it had set longer than I have been alive and now it's hauling my ass all over the sky....and doing a fine job of it too .

        My plane had been stored for twenty three years. I don't think the owner ever turned the prop while in storage or used any sort of desicant. When I split the case the cam and crank both had a very good film of oil on them but the cylenders were a bit dry. Just a light layer of rust that would have honed out. I bored them .015 over and chromed back to standard. The gas had been shut off but not drained and was VERY BAD. The gas shut off was stuck and when finally opened the carburetor leaked like a sive! But the engine was basically in good shape.

        I now use MMO in the gas but not the oil. I use Shell 15w50 and am pleased with the results. In the winter months I try and fly it twice a month and usually get around 125 hours or more a year on it.

          I've been hearing all this hype about MMO, and I'm wondering how much to use, whether to use it in the gas, the oil, or both. Do I just the the directions on the can, or is there a better rule of thumb, or....? Should I use it all the time, or once in a while, or periodically? My C65 has 700 SMOH and is running fine, but I've had a carbon problem which leads to my next question:

          I've been running Mobil 93. What do those in the know (anybody but me) use?

          A lot of questions here, so I apologize in advance.

              I use MMO per the directions on the can in the gas only. I think the Shell 15w50 has good anti-corrosion abilities on its own. I use a 35gal tank mounted in my truck with an electric pump on it. I always mix the MMO in that tank to avoid the mess while fueling the plane.

                I've also used MMO in the fuel per the directions on the bottle. Knock on wood, but never had a stuck valve running 100LL in close to 400hrs with C90s.
