Famed test pilot found in wreckage of plane

    Thursday, April 20, 2006; Posted: 2:11 p.m. EDT (18:11 GMT)

RANGER, Georgia (AP) -- Legendary test pilot Scott Crossfield, the first person
to fly at twice the speed of sound, was found dead Thursday in the wreckage of a
single-engine plane in the mountains of northern Georgia, his son-in-law said.

Searchers with the Civil Air Patrol and others discovered the wreckage of the
plane Thursday afternoon but didn't immediately identify the body inside.

We've lost another of the great ones.

I had the honor of having dinner with Mr. Crossfield about 10 years ago, an incredibly gracious and interesting man. Godspeed Scott.

I talked with him last month at the EAA chapter Chili cook-off.
I told him that I'd been to Alliance for the Tcraft fly-in and saw his autograph scrawled across the cowling of one of the Tcrafts.

How old was Mr.Crossfield,do you know what type of plane he was flying or what might have happened?

He was 84 and if the news is right (which is always under question) he was flying a Cessna 210A.

          Sad.

              This from the DCPilot's list:

" I talked with Scott at the New Market airport a couple of years ago. He happened to be landing there and seemed happy to talk. When I talked about my children attending Crossfield Elementary he told me that he felt naming the school after him was the greatest honor that he had received.

Crossfield Elementary will be "doing something" but as of 2:00 wasn't sure what. Scott lived accross the street from Crossfield and was involved with the school frequently. Many years ago I came home from Oshkosh and told my daugther "I saw Scott Crossfield speak at Oshkosh", she said "Why was he there?". I responded, "Well dear, he's famous!" she replied "He's famous everywhere? I just thought he was the guy who lives accross the street and came to the science fair". That's probably how he would want to be remembered, by elementary students as the nice guy who lived accross the street and came to the science fair. Scott was a great supporter of aviation education and will be sorely missed.

at least he went out in a aircraft, rather than a bleached bed liner. Hope I am still able to fly at 84. nice job, my hat is off to you and the extrordinary life that you lived. heres to you.

Crossfield was one of my heros when I was a kid. He lived a full life and he died with his boots on. God speed, Scott.

My son and I saw him last year at a talk at the CAF in Midland. What a great spokesperson for aviation. He talked at length about flying the Xplanes and then showed several slides from the Centennial of Flight celebration as he was the flight instructor for the reproduction of the Wright Flyer.
Like Steve Whitman he went out doing what he loved!

He wasn't THAT old! I'm 85 and intend to fly a while longer. I heard a thunderstorm got him.
