Hi Len,
I know a fellow that improved his radio performance by putting his antenna back under the tail. You might try that before going with at least one shielded mag set up for the bottom plugs.
The Eismann AM 4 Mags are unsheilded, the LA 4 are shielded. My antenna is mounted behind the wing, and it's scratchy but usable. I'd also like to know if there is a way of improving reception. Where under the tail do you mean?
I have used a Comm-Spec handheld in the past ( it was stolen about 4 yrs ago) ; it had such great noise rejection that it worked fine with non-shielded plugs. Maybe check with a radio guy about filters. Yes if the antenna is way back on the fin that will help too!
Hi,
The antenna was mounted under the tail. He used one of the inspection covers to mount it on. I believe it was reinforced around the area with thin aluminum sheet to also act as a ground plane. Also, you could mount it pointing straight down in front of the tailspring. Just getting it away from the engine will help.
I too have the3 Eisemann AM-4 mags, I was messing around the hangar and found an old whip antenna, so I mounted it inside the fuselage, just behind the baggage compartment, clamped it around one of the brace tubes between the lower longerons, close to one side, took-off and called a control tower 9 miles away, they came back "loud & clear", amazing, now I have a nice antenna, with nothing showing on the outside, too bad I have no way of making it legal, guess I'll just take it out before annual time.
