  • aileron attach fittings

In tearing down both of the wings on my BC12D I found one had cast aluminum fittings and one had welded 4130 fittings. I don't know if I need to match them up or not although I would probably prefer to go with both cast fittings. Also one wing was rib-stitiched and one was riveted. Obviously, it's a mixed and matched bird. It's a 1946 Serial 6497 with N-number 39243. Obviously, I'll be needing parts.

Hmmmmmmmm.....I'm rebuilding my '46 F19 conversion and found the same thing. Cast on one side and welded on the other. I wonder if our planes ever crossed paths.
Several people on this forum have stated their preference for the welded, but since I have a spare set of cast in good shape, I'll make both sides cast.

The welded ones don't tend to corrode as bad.... but both will work. When I tore mine down, I found alot of things that didn't quite "match" up... I have a friend that used to work at Taylorcraft in the 40's and he told me that if they could, they matched stuff...if they couldn't, they grabbed what they had, as times were always tight around there... so he wasn't at all suprised.

I'm interested in your welded fittings, maybe trade for my cast?

I'm not ready to get rid of the welded just. I'm still thinking about which to go with. Plus, I already have a set of cast to replace them.
I do believe they are the same from side to side and it would be pretty easy for a handy chap to weld up a set.

If you have a set of cast fittings, they are more likely to be magnesium, not aluminum. I am sure you have inspected them, but pay close attention to the area where the two steel tabs attach to the fitting. Alot of dissimilar metal corrosion in that area.
