  • Preflight Surprise

Yesterday I was introducing a pilot-wannabe (John) to my Taylorcraft. Our plan was to go on a short introductory flight, land at Hammond, LA (a hard-surface municipal airport near here) introduce John to an instructor there then fly home to our grass strip.

So as he was following me throught the preflight, I was telling him aloud what I was doing and thinking. When I was on the right side of the engine compartment, checking the oil, I was saying something like, "I check the spark plug wire connections to make sure they're tight. I tug on the magneto to make sure it doesn't mooo..." And as the right magneto rotated about 5 degrees, I said "We're grounded." He said "What?"

I explained the situation while wiggling the mag left and right. He was fascinated. Since we had tight schedules, we didn't have time to retime the mag.

So we didn't fly. But he told me several times how intrigued he was by what happened. It did seem like a good learning experience for him.

We drove to Hammond to meet the instructor. While we were there a georgeous Cessna 195 landed to refuel on his way to Sun-N-Fun. I talked to the owner for a bit. They were from Houston (Hooks Airport, I think he said). The ship was shiny aluminum. He said that his wife shined it for this trip. It took about a week to shine. Sick. But amazingly beautiful.

I'm not going to Sun-n-Fun this year. But my hangarmate is in N36060, a bright yellow 1941 BC. Andre' is his name.

Tim, I remember asking an instructor exactly "what" he was looking for under the cowl one time.... he stuttered and stammered and never could give me an answer, other than "just the general condition of stuff".... hahhaa... It showed me right there that alot of people just "go through the motions" when doing a preflight... Good job on your part!!! I'm sure your friend will NEVER forget that lesson!!

Good caught Tim. I worked on the Paser yesterday. I am not finished the house yet but needed a break. The fugelage of the T-Craft is getting repaired by and IA that is very good at working on older airplanes. He is the same one that fixed yours when I redid it. I was lucky to get him. I can't wait to finish the house so I can get back to work on the T-Craft. Nothing flys like a T-Craft. I miss it. I am doing the annual on the Paser this week.

          Tim,

I added this to my checklist. I use a checklist because I fly infrequently.

In fact, for a while, I didn't use a checklist. Then one day I picked it up after I had done my usual good preflight and found that I missed a couple of items that at one time, at least I thought were important.

I now use a checklist to preflight everytime. Guess what? Other than a few students I know, no other pilot that I know uses one.

Anyway, Tim this is a good thing to check from now on.

          Thanks!

I have not flown for a week and went out yesterday to fix a small gas leak, when I opened the cowl there was a full size birds nest with eggs on top of the airbox. That must have been one busy bird!

I cleaned a nest off the the engine of my C-170 sunday morning(yesterday day morning)and this afternoon it was completely covered again and looked as if I had never cleaned it! Two more 170's are parked across the apron facing the other direction and niether have had a single bird in them.

Tim, good job. I like you always try to do a good pre flight. Altho, I must admit for many years, I didn't. Airplanes were new and I wa always in a hurry. Lucked out then. But now with my aircraft almost as old as I am, it certainly pays to ck.

Sun N Fun this week, We are having a little fly-in here on the 6th of May ( i think, will make certain) Crayfish Boil. Tell Andre. Also Vic, take some time off and fly here. Also the other Cajun T-Crafts. Ok Alabama, you too. I'll get a Lat/LON for you guys. It's at my Buddy's grass strip. Much nicer than mine. About 10 west of LFT.

                  Lee,
Thank you for the invite but that's my work week, all the fun stuff happens when I work. One of these days I will get to quit and play with my airplane full time. We have a couple of local fly-ins coming up that are pretty good Roy E Ray is south of Mobile 10 miles or so and is scheduled for the first weekend in May. (EAA Chapther 409) The second one is the first weekend of June (EAA Chapter 1209) that fly in will be at St. Elmo 2R5 five miles south west of Mobile. Rays a grass strip 2000' and St. Elmo is 4000' pavement. Ray's is a lot of fun lots of grass and grass roots flying.
                  Thanks Again,
                  Mike

Yellow Duck, that sounds like fun. What about Eric Hollingsworth? Does he frequent this forum? He used to. He keeps a BC-12 in Madison Mississippi (near Jackson)?

We also have a couple of Luscombes, a Champ, and a Super Cub at our strip. Should I tell them about this? Or do you want to keep it small?

Tim, they are welcome also. Will get the Lat/Lon tomorrow. Hopefully we can get enough crayfish. They have not been as available since the hurricanes. But come on down and have fun.

Sean Tucker had to bail out of his aircraft today here in Louisiana. The control stick broke. He is okay, the aircraft is in pieces. On his way to Sun & Fun. Should be in the news tomorrow.

And ask your self: How worked on it last?
I was taking my Wife to be for her first flight, and the plane,my flight school trainer, had it's 50 hr inspection dune.
During my walkaround I found the following:
The chains to the tailwheel was unevenly hocked up . With the rudder straight, the wheel had a 20 Deg or so angel to it.
Too much oil in the engine, the old oil was still on the bottom.
                        A C85 with 8 Quarts in it!
The air tube to the generator was off.
Very sloppy work by the mechanic.
What do you think my now wife thought of aircrafts when we finaly where to start up, all straped in, and the battery was dead!
                        The O-sh-t factor went high!
Yes, we did hand prop, but?
Does she fly with me now? No.

I loved airplane seens I was a kid.
