  • Engine Temps

Prior to the new prop, my engine temps were about 195-205 in cruise. Since the new prop, my temp this evening was 210 in cruise, with a quick jump to 215 (followed by a quick return to 211) during a short climb.

What engine temps to you all see?

BTW, I have a C85-12, went from a McCauly 7144 to a McCaully 7148 prop. The outside air temp was about 80 when I departed and in the mid 70's when I landed. The prop RPM's are right on(ie: static, climb, cruise, and max power).

    Re: Engine Temps

The 71/44 is a climb prop where the 71/48 is a cruise prop. When you go to more pitch you raise the manifold pressure causing the engine to lug or work a little more at the same rpm. This doesn't mean you have a problem or your engine will wear out faster,it just means your temp will run a little warmer then it would with a climb prop.As long as the temp stays at or below 225 then your still ok. You may also check you baffles, are they are getting old, worn, or loose,do they have any cracks in them or a few patches on them,is the rubber or baffle material getting old and stiff? Any of these could help bring the temp to a higher reading, the cure for this is to repair, rebuilt,or replace the patched, craked, or worn baffles..this will help a bunch in some cases.

Baffles were the first thing I thought of too, Kevin.... Throw a trouble light in the bottom cowl opening, pointing up, then go shut the hangar lights off and look into the top cowl intake openings.... see how much light is coming in around the baffles.... it might suprise you.. Mine were terrible when I got my plane, and I re-sealed them, using the orange silicone and it made a world of difference!
