I have a refurbished BC12-D and don't want to go to straight ski's nor do I want to stay on wheels in the winter
Dick Smith are you retired Anchorage School District teacher?
I may be a former student if it's you

    Re: ski's

Danny, Nice to hear from you...however I'm not the Dick Smith, who was a teacher in ANC. Have lived around Kenai/Soldotna since 1969...been on the Dolly Varden Platform in the Inlet, for nearly 20 years...retired about 2 years. ago. Had the same Taylorcraft since about 1975. I've not seen one on wheel skis, myself, but I'm sure it could be done. If you found the lightest penetration-type skis around, you could make it work, but it would definitely be a compromise. I will ask a few questions of someone who might know.
The Taylorcraft tribe here in AK is gearing up to get together, hopefully in the next month or so. We would sure like to get acquainted with you. Will be sure to let you know what shapes up.
Looking out side right now...gearing up to head for Nondalton for a couple of days. Hope this big high works for us...Iliamna is not so good...Port Alsworth looks great!! Dick

      Re: ski's

      hi danny
I saw a blue t-craft with a white stripe on it with wheel skis last weekend on lake hood, if I see it again I will ask what they think of them. Do you have a 65hp or bigger. I have the 65hp and put landes 2000s on them. They are real nice with me in it but with another person and gear it is alot of drag and ad a little fresh snow and it takes a while to get of the ground: Could really use more horse power with that big of a ski, but at least I stay on top of the snow.

Dick are you going on a caribou hunt out their??
I have been thinking of doin that soon

        Re: ski's

I have the 85 with the 0200 crank
BJ at palmer says it should be putting out about 97 hp
I put the v/gs on also so it flys at slow speeds very well
I want to put it on skis next year

          Re: Reason for trip.

Dan, I'm not hunting on this trip, just hauled one of my four boys out to fly with an instructor here at Nondalton. I just shoveled snow off the lake for about an hour so the plane could be moved up on the main strip. The kid and his instructor just headed for King Salmon. The Taylorcraft doesn't have all the gear for the instrument and night portions of the private ticket. I'm tied down out on the lake in front of the village. Using a snowmachine for one tiedown and a runway drag for the other. The flight out was just about perfect, hardly any wind and visibility about a 100 miles. I'll probably try to catch a caribou or two a little later in the winter.
I will be interested in what you find out about the wheelski question. Dick

                    Re: ski's

Doesn't that Aero Ski outfit out of Minnesota make something about the right size? I remember talking to them a few years ago about wheel skis for a PA20 and I really liked their design. It was simple, and light... and the price wasn't too bad either, if I remember..

                      Re: ski's

Just spoke with Troy at Aero Ski in Brutan, MN (320-346-2285). The way I understand it is this: They have a Taylorcraft there on wheel skis that they used to certify their skis, however they don't have anything certified for the Taylorcraft itself. I'm going to try and fly up there in the next week or so with my camera to discuss the possibilities. The skis sound pretty big for a t-craft though -18" X 71."

                        TrickAir....not certified though...they look like they'd be perfect for a T-Craft

Not to totally hijack the thread, but..

Dick, You (they) can take the checkride in anything that you can get an examiner to OK. I did all of my instrument and night with a compass and T&B.

                            Re: ski's

We got 31" of snow in the U.P. on Monday...so I'm going ski flying. It's 34 degrees wind @ 5...Same forcast for the whole weekend. My 15 year old is going to get some more ski training in the T-Craft this weekend. Just like landing on a cloud......I threw out some pine boughs on the lake for reference what with the fresh snow and all. He also just got his drivers permit....guess I'm in the right seat all the time for the next year. Life IS good!
