  • Just installed VG's on my f-19

Hello just figured I was let everybody know I installed micro aerodynamics vortex generators on my plane and flew it.
before install i flew it and had a power off stall with positive break under full gross conditions at around 45 and under full power around 43 . Under both cases , I had a positive break with a definite stall and under a full power condition plane would have a tendency to want to start into a spin if given the opportunity. Aileron use during the stall , would only aggravate the plane into a stall or into a spin if you didn't pay attention to your footwork.

After the install of the v g s I noticed a definite difference in stall behavior and now I do not have a definite break during the stall . But more of a mush with a minimal loss of altitude.

What I did find interesting , was that I could still be flying at 39 or 40 and still throw in full aileron left and righta ndthe plane . just did exactly what I asked and I can say from previous experience . that was impossible when approaching the stall or in a stalled condition .
I know that my stall speed , indicated has decreased by three and possibly five but what has really impressed me is the ability to throw in full aileron with a yoke back in your belly with no problems whatsoever. I'm sure my landings , as well as my takeoffs will be shorter as to how much I'm sure I will find out later that most noticeable is the improved handling at slow speed . it was truly impressive . even my mechanic , who was riding with me at the time could only say wow.

Thanks for the report Shawn...that's what Charlie (microareo) explained to me as well...he said VG's aren't necessarily replacing a STOL kit... their primary feature is CONTROL at lower speed.

            Shawn
Its great to here a good report on the vgs. I have a set but havent put them on yet. I have a new set of tail featherd to put on when i do then ill have the vgs put on. I have a 46 that has more or less converted to a 19 but it is no elec, It stalls at 43 power off and 40 power on. mine has no tendency to want to spin and when i want it to spin i haft to use full rudder. I think the vgs will help with slow speed handling on floats as well.

Re: Just installed VG's on my f-19

my plane only seems to want to spin under full power during a stall, of course , like I said that was before the VG's.

Also , I flew the plane again today and was amazed by the stability . typically I fly it around 70 in the pattern and then bleed off on final today I made the assumption just going by the feel of the plane that I was doing 70 and three times in a row . I was actually doing 59 miles an hour . so basically at 60 . the plane has a feel like it is doing 70 . if that makes sense to anybody.

Also , I tried again today to get some kind of a stall break and I held the yoke fullback for approximately 20 seconds and the plane did absolutely nothing but decend in a nose high attitude totally controllable.

I honestly can't say how much I have actually shaved off the stall speed because our weather has been so unsettled with a lot Wind . Actually , I don't think I will call it stall speed anymore . I believe mush speed is more of an accurate term at this point.

I can honestly say after today's flight . the money I spent for the VG's is probably the most important thing I have put on my airplane from just a safety standpoint alone . not to mention the improved handling. Maybe $700 is a lot to pay but I figure if it saves you when you make a mistake . it could definitely be a cheap price.

Also , I think if your a person just basically flying from point a to point B. and arent concerned with using your taylorcraft or any other plane for that matter to its full potential then I suppose the VG's would not matter . but for me . I am totally sold on them and hell I have only had them for a couple days
