What is the procedure for mounting the tires?

I put the tube inside the tire...and then inflate it before bolting the two wheel halves together?

It doesn't look like the valve stem is long enough to go through the little hole in the wheel. And what keeps the valve stem from just falling back into the tire before I get everything bolted together?

Hi Bob, here is a useful link from my employer.........

Also, search the Forum for tire and tube questions, there was quite a funny discussion a while back.

yes partial inflation is the way, gets the creases out, then let a lot back out, use tire talc. the NUT on the outside of the valve stem keeps her from going away... IF it is the right tube.

        Re: Tire Mounting

        Thanks David and Forrest

I got the tires mounted last night. The goodyear info was helpful, but short on details. Here's what I learned:

        1. My wifes body powder makes a good substitute for tire talc. But now my tires smell like a French toilet.

        2. I couldn't find a torque specification for the the thru bolts so I tried using the torque spec for a AN4 bolt. It seemed like I could never quite get up to torque, I think the long thin bolts were stretching or the wheel was deforming. Anyway, I ended up just tightening the 3 nuts evenly tight by feel with a short handle wrench.

        3. My tubes do not have a little nut on the valve stem to hold them in the wheel hole. They are McCreary tubes. Everytime I tried to inflate the partly inflated tube the stem just pushed back into the wheel. Frustrating. I tried cursing bitterly at it, but that didn't seem to work. So finally I got down my old bicycle pump. It has a clever plastic fitting on its business end with a little lever on top. Moving the lever down tightens the fitting on the valve stem and holds it in place. By carving 1/8 inch of plastic off the end of the plastic lever fitting I was able to get it secured over the valve stem and pumped up. After inflation the air pressure pushes the valve stem out where it belongs.

The tires held 25 psi overnight, so everything seems to be ok. I'll check them again in a few days.

What is a source for the thin nuts on the valve stem? Mine are missing.
