        Dan,
Why don't you stop in Portland for a couple of days and get it from Dave Wiley? He's a curmudgeonly old cuss, but you will learn the right way.
Plus, He teaches in his BCS-12D with an 85 in it, so you'll have a great frame of reference when you get home. He's a member of the Forum, but apparently has been inactive for a couple of years. He was the "Seaplane Pilot of the Year" a while back and has extensive experience in Alaska.

I got my rating from him 10 or 12 years ago and it was a lot of fun.....not a quickie rating, but real world float flying and easily done in 2 or 3 days. I live across the river from him and about 5 miles south. Here's his blurb:

        Wiley's Seaplanes
        13060 SW Fielding Road
        Lake Oswego, OR 97034
        Contact: Dave Wiley, Owner; 503/636-4930 (tel), 503/422-3454 (tel), 503/229/9464 (cell/pgr), 503/697/1828 (fax)
        Email: [email protected]

        Hourly Rates Dual Solo
        Taylorcraft BCS12DFloats $120 N/A
        Taylorcraft DCO-65Tandum Tailwheel $80 N/A

        Comments:
Training includes river flying and other bush techniques. "Quickie" ratings not available. Exam $200, ground instruction 35/hr.
