  • Radio static

I don't have shielded ignition and have engine static through my Sporty's handheld navcom. I saw on one of these threads that the ICOM handheld has a noise suppressor and thought that someone said that it helped eliminate some engine static. Am I right in thinking that the ICOM can help the noise? I will buy one just to eliminate some noise. I am not ready to modify my cowling yet. If the ICOM works, that is the way I will go.

I use a Icom, connected to a external antinna with a headset. I pick up engine noise anywhere forward of the bagage sling, so, I lay the radio in the bagage sling. No noise, and people tell me my transmission is excellant. bobp

      Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I take it that you don't have shielded ignition. Does the noise suppression feature work for you?

      Thanks again.

My JRC worked very well with unshielded ignition and extrnal antena.
        Even better with shielded.

I have a Icom A-5. Shielded on bottom, unshielded on the top.
Ext. ant the anl helps but there is still noises when running both mag.
Some mags are better than others, my are bendix.
Before spending the money find an icom on the airport and try it.

            Frank,

I do not have shielded ignition, nothing seemed to work for me, until I moved the radio back of the seats, actually I find it very handy, I lay the radio on the right side and it is very easy to reach, Bob

A friend of mine has a shielded harness with standard ends put on.....he said he did it so he wouldn't have to put cowl bumps on....he just uses regular plugs. Approved??? I doubt it...but his radio sure works good.
