  • Engine running rich

The last two times I flew, my engine was loading up after landing. (running rich). I pulled the plugs yesterday and they in fact were black, Running very rich it seemed. I cleaned them, thighten the idle mixture 1/4 turn (to check if that may have been the problem). Will fly today if weather is okay.

If that is not the problem, will check to see if it might be the primer "O" rings.

Always fun flying old airplanes. But, hell, what else do we have to do. LOL

    Lee,

Mine was doing the same and leaning the mixture with the mixture needle helped greatly. It might be easier to test the primer by disconnecting it. If you have the one line that goes into the intake spider, disconnect it and cap off the inlet rather than take apart the primer. At least you will know fairly quick if that is the problem. Good luck!
    Cheers,
    Marty

Check out Harry Fenton's writings on the small continental at the following site. Scroll down to the article "A65 quits on rollout". Good reading.

Thanks Gary, lots of good info. Will start with adjusting the idle mixture, then cap the primer off (possible problem). Then go from there

Better cap off the primer line too while you're at it....

              Re: Engine running rich

I think I have the problem. Will know after a few flights. I pulled the primer, cleaned and put a very small amount of petrolume Jelly on the O rings. They looked good, cleaned the housing out and started and flew. Everthing worked well and flew nice, Engine ran well. But it make take a few flights to know for certain.

My 1940 BC65 has had the primer disconnected since it was restored,(before I bought it), and it runs just fine. Brie
