  • Winds not so aloft..........

    Well, I got my first fly it to the tie down experience yesterday. VERY interesting.

    A bunch of us decided to fly up to Lancaster Dallas (KLNC) to goof off. It was annoying to see the cars passing us on the highway...... I think our ground speed averaged 75mph which actually isn't too bad. It took 2 hours for a 1.2 hour trip.

    We landed 36 and the wind was 33knots out of 33. Just as I touched down, for the third time , I noticed on the gps that my ground speed was 16! The clipper and the 172 that were flying up with me were doing an offroad excursion instead of using the Taxi ways, the clipper was having a very hard time taxing......

    Just having gone through my annual, I had nicely adjusted brakes and was able, with careful finess, to taxi fine. The only really shocking experience was when taxiing at 6.8 mph (gps reading again) my left wing decided to try and go flying again!!! That sucker got up about 3 ft before I knew it!! I made it to the tie down fine and waited for one of the other guys to run over and tie the wing and tail down.

    The one really annoying problem I had on the way back was keeping up with everyone. We had a direct crosswind so were cruising at about 100 to 116. My Airspeed was registering 110 to 120. Then I would get in a thermal. Next thing I know I'm 500 feet up and pulling back on the throttle to keep from going faster. It literally felt like I was surfing home!

    Not exactly my favorite conditions, but a good experience.

    Yep it was fun this morning up here in Alliance. Landing on 36 with about 22-25 kt stuff from the left about 45 degrees, I was goofing off not thinking of the landing and WHAM , gust rolled me about 40 degrees to the right toward the tree line.
    I could see the headlines " Famed Aviator crashes into trees adjacent to his airport, medical issues suspected!" I rolled her back out with a lot of power, I had carried extra speed on the approach ( just like Dad taught me) made my wheel landing and taxied to the hangar where I rolled straight in shut down, exited , kissed the ground, pee'd , then turned her around and closed the hangar doors...... GREAT DAY!

        Forrest,
        Remember the last time I was in there, flying a C-170B......Either runway was a 45 degree cross wind with gusts to 45-50kt (or so that's what Canton/Akron was reporting), either way it was interesting, I did not leave soon either, I spent the rest of the day bugging Forrest and helping him move furniture.

          WHO could forget Kevin , he is a "true believer" as Merton Meade used to put it. I wondered why he hung around so much that day. , hmmmm winds were okay for the take-off its that taxiing that will get you every time....

            Just flew mine back home from annual yesterday. Taxiing out with 45 degree quartering tailwind on the taxiway was reminded that if you gotta' ride that ol' Shinn brake too long it'll get hot & fade out. Weathercocked into the wind, sat there a minute and assessed the situation? Grass looked pretty good straight ahead, don't take very far to get 'er off into 25kts on the nose? Flew low bucking the headwind all the way home, landed straight into the wind and taxied right straight up to the hanger. Ahhh, life is GOOD!

                Knock it off! I just spent 1 1/2 hrs listening to the local EAA Chapter try to schedule things for this year... I needed that bit of humor. thanks Bob

                    It brings to memeory one day during training in the Fleet 80 Canuck.
                    After landing on 23 straigt into a strong head wind and turning off onto the taxiway, I am riding one brake, ailerones into the wind, 1200 rpm, ok I was taxing fast, but trying all trix in the book to go straght.
                    My in structor said: You are taxing to fast! Puches in the trottle. We almost ground looped as she weather cooked! Darn near 90 Deg.
                    He said: You hade her under control Ahh! Soory!
                    the O- Sh-t factor becomes high quikly in a tailgragger and crosswind.
                    20 years later I am learning the lesson over agin.
                    What time I was lucky, no serius damage!
