Mike
Unfortunately "rebuild cylinder head" could mean they just disassembled the cylinder, checked everything for wear, and replaced, rebushed, or reground whatever was out of limits. Personally, I like to have guides, seats, and rocker bushings replaced. Then have the valves either reground or replaced. You get what you pay for.Richard Pearson

Re: What does "rebuild engine cylinder head" imply?
Mike- If it has been described as rebuilt it should meet the definition as listed in FAR 43.2 paragraph B. Here is what that says-
43.2 (b) No person may describe in any required maintenace entry or form
an aircraft, airframe, aircraft engine, propeller, appliance, or
component part as being rebuilt unless it has been disassembled,
cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary, reassembled, and tested to
the same tolerances and limits as a new item, using either new parts or
used parts that either conform to new part tolerances and limits or to
approved oversized or undersized dimensions.

Re: What does "rebuild engine cylinder head" imply?
"Rebuilt" is also a loose inaccurate term for "overhauled" or repaired. They're entirely different because rebuilt means parts must be returned to "new tolerances." An overhauled part does not have to be returned to new tolerances. Repaired means you just fix what's broken and put it back together. Mike, if you are looking at a plane with rebuilt cylinder head it is inaccurate because you cannot rebuild just cylinder head unless it's a Lycoming as I said before, or you just did a valve job and that doesn't make much sense in the context of "rebuilt," and usually only the manufacturer or high-fallutin approved shops do rebuilds. I would probe deeper with the seller and ask to see a copy of the records.

Ed - thank you; like the word 'architecture' here at work; I know enough that's a warning sign - means different things to different folks, so we need to start off with a definition. - MikeMike Horowitz

Re: What does "rebuild engine cylinder head" imply?
Mike,
It sounds like you are looking at a prospective purchase that is claiming the cylinder head was "rebuilt". When I am in that situation I always take the attitude that if it doesn't have a yellow tag, it didn't happen. I always look for the documentation.Richard Pearson
