It seems there are a lot of golfers that fly, but not many pilots that golf. I've never figured that one out. The essence of both seems so similar to me....the undertaking of an almost Zen-like physical, mental and essentially solo quest for perfection. Each are a strange hybrid of art and science. You must intellectually understand all the principles involved to do either well, but in the end you just have to "feel" it. I love both and if I had a gun to my head, I'm not sure which I'd give up.

The fellow that owns this nice Stearman and keeps a hangar at Evergreen told me it looks like June 1 is the last day for Evergreen.

This is Wally's UPF7....I was just about to go fly it. The thing I like about this one is in the background on the left, you can see my Taylorcraft, N43457. It's one of my personal favorite airplane pictures.

When it comes to saving general aviation airports, privately owned ones raise significant challenges because there's not much that can be done to keep a private owner from selling the property for nonaviation uses. Case in point: Evergreen Field in Vancouver, Washington. AOPA has fought since 1994 to keep the privately owned, public-use airport open. AOPA repeatedly encouraged Clark County to protect and even purchase the airport. However, the private owners have opted to accept a lucrative deal from developers. Tenants have until the end of the month to vacate the field, which will close permanently on March 31. AOPA has prepared a downloadable white paper, Airport Closures at Privately Owned/Public-Use Airports, to help members overcome the challenges of preserving a privately owned airport.

In truth, I'm surprised Shelburne has managed to survive as long as it has given the Burlington sprawl. My hat's off to Ray and the rest of you!
I remember fondly flying in low and slow over the lake on approach to that once lovely grass strip north west of you (Champlain?) before the developers gobbled it up.

So what is going on with the Shelburne strip? Have the Teddy Bears moved in on you? Maybe what's needed to save your airport are a few more antique airplanes and a creative proposal to the Shelburne Museum to take over the strip and preserve another American artifact. Why should steamships, railroad cars, circus trains, fire trucks, horse-drawn carriages and other modes of transportation monopolize their visitors' attention?

Otherwise, It's not too late, as a matter of fact it's your duty, to start up another grass field airport somewhere!

Hopefully with some education, the general public will someday see that grass airstrips - like farms, cemeteries and parks - make good open space buffers.

If you really want to get your hands on the airplane you'll have to jump on it soon. If they were easy to get they would have been gotten already. The problem is the owner's personality. I suggest you call the office and pursue it that way - remember there are two sad cases on the field with two different owners.
