  • Slummin' with the Cub Boys

Here are a few pix of a 2005 trip down on the Ak Peninsula, where the Aleutian Peninsula starts. One Cub and 1 Taylorcraft met up with 3 more Cubs, for some beachcombing and fun flying. About 600 miles 1 way. Dick

Great photos, Dick. Were you running 8:50 tires during that trip? I want to put some on mine when I get off skis in the spring. Speaking of which, are you on skis and flying now?? If so we need to plan another fly in trip to Vogel lake or somewhere, preferebly where Augustine ash won't get us. Steve.

Dick, love the pics. That thing you holding by the mouth ? Is that good to eat ? lol

Dick, I'm ascard just looking at the stuff you guys fly over in these old airplanes. Hell I hate the thought of going to Vic's, about 75 miles south of me, over pretty much nothing but Marsh and Swamp. And it ain't even cold here.

But love your sand (gravel) bars to fish off of. Looks mighty nice.

          Re: Slummin'...tire sizes and fish

Steve, yes my tires are 8.50 X 6.00 in size. The Cubs were mostly 31 inchers. They landed on a few island beaches that I passed on...with flaps, power and big tires. There are a lot of places where you might get down, but would have little or no chance of getting back out.
Regarding Vogel Lake flyin or otherwise...I have talked to Jim Hartley and emailed Matsuthunder...they are both up for it...pending a bit of warmer wx, longer days, and cooperation from the volcano. If we start rustling around, I'm sure we can get some others to check in on a get-to-gether. I will give you a call on the phone. Dick

Lee, that fish got to go back in the water...It was a Dolly Varden. The Dollies congregate in the river, waiting for the salmon to arrive and start spawning. We caught and released a good number of them. That river is an interesting place...there are scads of rocks laying along the bank at the high water mark...they are pumice rocks, that float down the river from the volcanic areas up in the hills. The beaches are all made of black volcanic sand.

              Hey Dick
Those walrus pictures look like they were taken at Cape Senaivin. My t-craft was their last year also. What time of year did you go? Did you fish Ilnik?

I dig those pics, I am the same way here in Seattle. I have not found any other "off-airport" Tcraft drivers so I hang out with the SC guys also or spend a lot of time out on my own.

Everyone S#!&* bricks when they see what a light 65hp Tcraft can do. And then I tell them it only cost me $11K

                  Re: Slummin'

Dan, you're correct on the location. We were through there in late March.
Didn't try Ilnik. We saw a lot of whales migrating. While sitting on the bluff, you could see them spouting. Saw quite a few bears and hundreds of bald eagles...lots of seals, foxes and a few caribou. We were lucky with the weather.

Jason, Keeping it light is the key. The other part is...per Stormin' Norman: "You gotta know your limitations"! "Knowing" often is preceded by "Finding"! I can't compete with a Supercub, but have an awful lot of fun with this plane. And as you mention...the Price is Right! Dick

I'm hoping to save enough money operating my Taylorcraft, to be able to afford a Cub! I would love to own both...! I trust my Cub friends will permit me some "literary license"...! They are generally possessed of a sense of humor. The best ones I know, learned in Taylorcrafts...!

Re: Slummin' with the Cub Boys

I think ol' CG Taylor would more or less agree with the word "slummin"...

The one year I had a J-3, I didn't hardly sleep at all. There were ghostly sounds of chains rattling in my sleep, and I could swear I heard voices in the night, shouting "You stole my company you bastard..." over and over again.

Never figured out where those voices came from, but ever since I got another Taylorcraft I've been sleeping rather peacefully

When I win the lottery, I do plan on building a flapped, drooped aileron, droop tipped, VG'd Taylorcraft and going up north to piss off a few people!
